Preparedness starts long before an incident occurs.

On 21 July 2026, CPFPA joined Rob Erasmus for another day of practical fire training at Stonehurst Mountain Estate.

Regular training helps strengthen practical skills, reinforce safe operating procedures and build the confidence needed to work effectively when conditions become challenging.

As we move closer to the Western Cape’s upcoming fire season, operational readiness is more important than ever. Provincial Minister Anton Bredell has confirmed that the Western Cape is preparing for an extended high-risk fire period, stretching from October through May, amid warnings of a potentially severe El Niño and the challenging conditions it could bring.

Ongoing training, preparation and collaboration will therefore remain critical to effective veldfire management throughout the season ahead.

MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE | KLOOFNEK FIRE

On 2 August 2026, a fire broke out in the Kloofnek/Table Mountain area, requiring a coordinated multi-agency response.

CPFPA’s West Ward Manager, Nicholas Herrmann, was also on scene, assisting in multiple roles and supporting the broader response effort.

Incidents like these highlight the importance of coordination, communication and having trained teams ready to respond when fires occur across the Cape Peninsula.

A strong reminder that effective veldfire management is a shared effort.

The CPFPA was pleased to support another Enviro Wildfire training session, where participants gained valuable practical knowledge and skills to help them work safely and effectively in fire-prone environments.

🌿 Restoring the Landscape, Reducing the Risk – Camps Bay site visit.

This view from Camps Bay tells an important story.

Following the phased removal of alien invasive vegetation, the landscape is beginning to recover while becoming safer for the communities that border it.

Alien invasive plants create heavy fuel loads that can increase the intensity and spread of veldfires. Clearing them not only helps reduce fire risk but also supports the long-term health of the Cape's unique fynbos ecosystem.

West Ward Manager Nicholas Herrmann and North Ward Manager Pierre Mouski recently visited the site to monitor progress as this important work continues.

Building Skills. Strengthening Partnerships.

Preparing for veldfire season is about more than equipment. It's about sharing knowledge and building capability.

West Ward Manager Nicholas Herrmann recently worked alongside Nature Connect during their Basic Wildfire Preparedness training at Zeekoevlei, providing practical instruction on operating the CPFPA skid unit and demonstrating basic firefighting techniques.

The training included members of the City of Cape Town Shark Spotting Team, helping equip them with practical skills that can support future veldfire operations when needed.

At the CPFPA, we're proud to work alongside our partners to strengthen preparedness, build confidence, and develop practical skills that benefit our communities.

The Firefighters' Rule of Thumb.

When these three conditions occur together, veldfires can spread rapidly and become extremely difficult to control:

🌡️ Temperature above 30°C
💧 Relative humidity below 30%
🌬️ Wind speeds above 30 km/h

This is known as the 30-30-30 Rule.

Under these conditions, firefighting becomes significantly more challenging, making early preparation and vigilance even more important.

On Site in Camps Bay.

Not every CPFPA site visit happens during a veldfire.

West Ward Manager Nicholas Herrmann visited a member's property in Camps Bay to inspect and sign off on vegetation clearing completed by a contractor.

These follow-up inspections help ensure that fuel reduction work meets the required standard and gives landowners confidence that their properties are better prepared for the upcoming fire season.

Preparing for fire season isn't a once-off task, it's an ongoing partnership between landowners and the CPFPA.

☎️ Behind Every Emergency Call Is a Coordinated Response.

When you report a fire or emergency in Cape Town, your call is received by the City of Cape Town's Fire & Rescue Control Room.

From there, trained dispatchers quickly assess the incident and alert the nearest Fire Station to respond. Every second counts, and this coordinated process helps ensure that the right resources are mobilised as quickly as possible.

Behind the scenes', dedicated teams are working 24/7 to help keep our communities safe.

🚒 It's another reminder that effective emergency response starts long before the first fire engine arrives.

The CPFPA EXCO recently met at the City of Cape Town's Fire & Rescue Headquarters at Goodwood, followed by a tour of the Fire & Rescue Control Centre.

The visit offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how emergency calls are transformed into coordinated action. From the moment a call is received, technology, teamwork, and real-time decision-making come together to ensure the right resources are dispatched when every second counts, helping to protect communities across Cape Town.
