Yesterday, the Council for the Built Environment brought the conversation on heritage into the spaces where South Africans live, work and build.

Speaking at the Community Outreach Programme in Avoca, Durban, the CEO of the CBE, Dr Msizi Myeza, reflected on the powerful relationship between heritage and the built environment.

“Heritage is not simply about preserving old buildings and monuments. It is about memory, identity, dignity and belonging.”

Our buildings, neighbourhoods, public spaces and places of worship tell the story of who we are, where we have come from and the South Africa we are working to build.

As we celebrate our living heritage, we are reminded that the built environment must not only preserve our history; it must also help create more inclusive, accessible and dignified communities for generations to come.

"When we preserve heritage, we preserve dignity. When we invest in infrastructure, we invest in opportunity." Hon. Ms

As we celebrate our living heritage, we are reminded that our languages, traditions, stories, heritage sites and built environment connect us to our past while creating opportunities for future generations. Preserving heritage is not only about honouring where we come from, but also about building stronger communities and sustainable livelihoods.
