In the top north-western corner where South Africa meets Namibia, lies one of nature's great anomalies - an ancient mountain desert that happens to be one of the most exciting biodiversity hotspots on earth.

|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is captured in a time of incredible bloom, where our very own Richtersveld scientist Pieter van Wyk takes viewers on a journey through an extreme landscape transformed into a carpet of colour.

Discover just some of the 5 000 remarkable plant species (40% endemic!) that have adapted to this seemingly inhospitable place.

Catch the special episode of Bewonder & Bewaar this Sunday, 7 June at 20:30 on KykNet, channel 144 on DStv. Also available on DStv Catch-Up.

Short-term closure of Bontebok National Park

Following severe flooding jn May 2026, during which the Breede River burst its banks, Bontebok National Park has sustained significant damage to several trails, tracks, and infrastructure.

All river-boarding trails and viewing decks have washed away, rendering these areas highly unstable and entirely inaccessible.

All affected routes remain strictly closed to visitor access until further notice.

The Lang Elsies Kraal Rest Camp has been temporarily closed, and a phased reopening approach will be communicated shortly.
