The Indigenous Knowledge-Based Technology Innovation Summit 2026 officially concluded earlier this week following three days of impactful engagement from 2 to 4 June.

The summit focused on economic industrialisation and unlocking new growth pathways in the bio-natural products sector. Key milestones included investment plenaries, the soft-launch of regional DSTI-funded research facilities, and strategic pitch sessions designed to connect emerging scientists with critical seed capital.

The newly announced winners of The Innovation Hub’s 2025/2026 GAP Innovation Competition also marked the commitment to driving societal change through entrepreneurship.

The summit strengthened a sustainable ecosystem where traditional knowledge meets commercial enterprise by providing these innovators with incubation, mentorship, and financial support to scale.

How the DSTI is Strengthening Health Security and Building South Africa’s Vaccine Autonomy

During the 2026/2027 Budget Vote presentation, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, shared on the progress being made to bolster the country's pandemic preparedness and health sovereignty capacity.

Through strategic partnerships, like the KfW, the DSTI has approved 19 vital infrastructure projects across South Africa.

The rollout is specifically designed to enhance every single stage of our local medical pipeline, from initial vaccine research and clinical testing to scaled-up industrial manufacturing and stringent regulatory oversight. The DSTI is actively supporting the country’s health sector by building capacity to ensure South Africa’s position as a pharmaceutical hub for the continent.

Forging strategic global partnerships that deliver tangible, life-saving infrastructure and domestic resilience are among the highlights of the Decadal Plan.

Weather Alert Continuation: Snow, Icy Conditions, and Family Preparation

The severe weather system continues into tomorrow, with an increased risk of extreme winter conditions, particularly in elevated sectors. Disruption to travel and services remains highly probable as the weather warning cycle concludes.

Stay prepared and minimise risk by taking the following actions:

Anticipate disruptive snowfall and icy road conditions in high-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution if you must use the roads.

Protect your family by preparing essential supplies in advance, including clean water, necessary medication, warm clothing, flashlights, and secure storage for important documents.

Avoid spreading unverified panic. Trust official information by following SAWS, GCIS, COGTA, local municipalities, and disaster management authorities for verified updates.

Severe Weather Warning: High Flood and Road Safety Alert

As severe weather conditions persist across various regions today, citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution and prioritise safety. Heavy rains and localised flooding pose an immediate threat to life and infrastructure.

Please adhere to the following critical safety protocols immediately:

Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flooded pathways or low-lying bridges. A flooded road can be deadly. Turn around, don't drown.

If your residential area or settlement is at risk of flooding, proactively move to safer, higher ground before conditions worsen.

Watch out for children. Keep them completely away from rivers, streams, stormwater drains, and flooded areas.
