SHIBUYUNJI COUNCIL INTENSIFIES FOOD SAFETY INSPECTIONS

SHIBUYUNJI, 21 SEPTEMBER 2026 —

Shibuyunji District Council Health Department, through Public Health Inspectors, has intensified routine food safety inspections in and around Nampundwe Market to protect consumers and promote good hygiene among food traders and shop owners.

During the inspection, the team found some expired food products, damaged packaging, poorly packaged food and products that needed better storage and handling.

The Health Department has reminded traders and food handlers to ensure that all food products are within their expiry dates, properly packaged, safely stored and fit for human consumption. Zambia’s Food Safety Act provides for health inspections to check compliance with food safety requirements.

The Council has also urged consumers to check expiry dates and packaging before buying food and to report any suspected unsafe products to Public Health Inspectors or the Council.

The inspections will continue in Nampundwe and other trading areas across the district.

The message is simple: check before you buy — safe food means a healthier community.

SHIBUYUNJI TOWN COUNCIL SWEARS IN THREE PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION COUNCILLORS

SHIBUYUNJI, 21 SEPTEMBER 2026— Shibuyunji Town Council today swore in three Councillors elected under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, representing women, youth and persons with disabilities.

The ceremony was officially opened by the Council Secretary, Mr Oscar Chilanga, in the presence of the Council Chairperson, Mr Macmillan Shimukonka, Councillors and other invited guests.

The swearing-in marks a milestone for Shibuyunji Town Council, as it is the first ceremony of its kind to bring into the Council the three categories of representation under the newly introduced proportional representation system.

The system provides for proportional representation of women, youth and persons with disabilities in councils. The Electoral Process (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2026 introduced Part IVA on the proportional representation electoral system, including provisions for councillors representing these categories.

The three Councillors sworn in are:

Mr Yoram Augustino Sabuya – Youth Representative ,Ms Cheelo Munganya – Women’s Representative
Mr Manyando Muyangwa– Representative of Persons with Disabilities

Speaking during the ceremony, Council Secretary Mr Oscar Chilanga welcomed the newly sworn-in Councillors and described the occasion as an important milestone for the Council.

Mr Chilanga said the introduction of proportional representation provides an opportunity for broader participation in local governance and ensures that different sections of society have a voice in decision-making.

He encouraged the newly sworn-in Councillors to familiarise themselves with their roles and responsibilities and to work closely with fellow Councillors and Council management in serving the people of Shibuyunji.

The Council Chairperson, Mr Macmillan Shimukonka, congratulated the three Councillors on their appointment and welcomed them to the Council.

Mr Shimukonka said their coming on board would strengthen representation in the Council and called on them to work together with the existing leadership for the development of Shibuyunji.

He urged the new Councillors to listen to the concerns of the communities they represent and to contribute positively to Council deliberations.

Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in Councillors, Mr Yoram Augustino Sabuya thanked the Electoral Commission of Zambia, Shibuyunji Town Council and all stakeholders for facilitating the process.

Mr Sabuya said the new Councillors were ready to take up their responsibilities and ensure that the voices of youths, women and persons with disabilities were heard in local government decision-making.

He pledged to work together with the Council leadership and fellow Councillors in promoting development and improving service delivery in Shibuyunji.

The three Councillors are expected to participate fully in Council proceedings and contribute to deliberations aimed at improving service delivery and promoting inclusive local governance.

SHIBUYUNJI SWEARS IN NEW COUNCIL LEADERS

Shibuyunji Town Council has sworn in its newly elected leaders, including the Council Chairperson, 12 Councillors, two Members of Parliament, an Alderman and other elected leaders.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Shibuyunji Town Council Civic Centre and was presided over by Magistrate Hon. Amy Masoja.

The ceremony was attended by Senior Chief Shakumbila, Members of Parliament, Councillors, Council management, traditional leaders, the media and other invited guests.

Welcoming the newly elected leaders and guests, Council Secretary Mr Oscar Chilanga said the Council was ready to work with the new leadership in delivering quality services and promoting development in the district.

Mr Chilanga said the Council was prepared to take the lead in implementing projects that would improve the lives of residents, including the installation of solar street lights aimed at improving security and enhancing the appearance of the town.

The newly elected Council Chairperson, Mr Macmillan Shimukonka, also delivered his acceptance speech after taking the oath of office.

In his speech, the Chairperson expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and pledged to work closely with Councillors, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, Council management and other stakeholders to promote development in Shibuyunji.

He said the new leadership would focus on addressing the needs of residents and ensuring that development projects were implemented in a transparent and accountable manner.

Giving the closing remarks, Councillor Mike Luputa thanked the invited guests, traditional leaders, elected leaders, Council management and all stakeholders for attending the ceremony. He called for unity, teamwork and commitment among the new leadership as they begin their mandate to serve the people of Shibuyunji.

The swearing-in marks the beginning of a new chapter for Shibuyunji Town Council, with the newly elected leaders expected to work together to strengthen service delivery and accelerate development across the district.

With the new leadership now officially in office, Shibuyunji looks forward to renewed commitment, teamwork and practical development that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of residents.
