The Petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that the City of Moreton Bay is experiencing a significant increase in homelessness, alongside growing public health concerns relating to waste management and access to basic sanitation in public spaces.

Frontline community organisations report a rising number of people sleeping rough across the region, with increasing pressure on parks and public areas where access to essential infrastructure such as waste disposal, toilets, and water is limited or unavailable.

The absence of practical measures such as waste collection, public toilets, and sanitation facilities in areas where people are known to be sleeping rough is contributing to:

Accumulation of waste in public areas
Public health risks for the broader community
Increased tension between residents, businesses, and vulnerable individuals
Greater strain on volunteer organisations and emergency services
Local governments have responsibility for public health, local amenity, and waste management. There is concern that current responses are not meeting the scale of need and may be contributing to avoidable health and community impacts.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to ensure support to local government for the provision of:

Management of homelessness in public spaces
Provision of waste management infrastructure
Access to public toilets, sanitation, and water facilities

Senator Penny Allman-Payne The Greens’ position is simple:
Eliminate for-profit providers, restore the Commonwealth Employment service, abolish mutual obligations and bin the TCF (the compliance system a government review found was acting unlawfully). While we call for genuine reform, Labor is keeping the entire broken system. This is not a shake-up, it’s a screw-up.
