News today from The Green Institute and Max Chandler-Mather:

Coles and Woolworths supermarket profits are enough to feed 1.5 million Australian children for an entire year.

That’s enough to feed every child in Australia living in poverty, with billions of dollars left over.

Our recent YouGov polling revealed 1 in 5 parents have sent their child to school without enough to eat in the last 12 months. More than 1 in 3 have skipped meals or eaten less due to the cost of food.

A public supermarket line is the only realistic way to break the Coles and Woolies stranglehold - putting these profits back into the pockets of families and driving down prices - by 30% on essentials and 22% across your whole shop.

From Senator Penny Allman-Payne:

Yesterday I joined the rally and march for Gaza in Meanjin. It was one of many actions held across the country for the Global Day for Gaza, marking three years of Palestinian resistance.

Three years of bombs, starvation and the targeting of children, schools and hospitals.

The Labor government has had every opportunity to act and has chosen to protect its relationship with Israel instead. That’s a choice they can never live down.

The Greens will keep pushing the government for a full two-way arms embargo, including ending Australia’s role in the F-35 supply chain, sanctions on Israel, expelling the Israeli ambassador and real accountability for Israel’s war crimes. We’ll also keep fighting for humanitarian visas so Palestinians can reunite with their family here.

We’ll keep standing with the community, in parliament and on the streets, for as long as it takes.

Thank you to the organisers, speakers, marshals and everyone who showed up yesterday. Palestine will be free.

Senator Penny Allman-Payne's office in Gladstone sits directly across from a major supermarket, and every week, dozens of people stop by because they can’t afford all their necessities.

They’ve been helping feed our community since opening the office in 2023, and we can see the demand growing.

Two companies control the market, so they set the prices of our everyday essentials with no incentive to keep things affordable.

There’s a better way.

A publicly owned supermarket would sell groceries at fair prices, not for maximum profit, and force the big chains to compete.

We already have public hospitals, public schools and public transport. Food is just as essential.
