Recently, our W**d Biosecurity Team has been monitoring and controlling Frogbit at Boomerang Creek, (Dorroughby-Corndale). 🐸🍃

👉 Working along more than 20 km of the creek, on foot and by kayak, the team located and managed scattered Frogbit infestations in this beautiful waterway.

❎ Frogbit is an aquatic w**d that can quickly become a serious threat if left unmanaged. It can:
- form large, dense mats across the water’s surface, block waterways
- outcompete native aquatic plants
- reduce light and limit food and shelter for fish and other aquatic animals

🥰 This control work not only protects the biodiversity of Boomerang Creek, it also reduces the risk of Frogbit spreading further downstream into Wilson River during rain events.

🌳 Follow-up control work will commence in three months to monitor the sites and manage any regrowth.

Keeping our rural flood mitigation infrastructure operating safely and effectively is an important part of our work.

As part of our Capital Renewal Program, we recently refurbished the lifting equipment at the West Coraki floodgates.

Gates are lifted only for maintenance, particularly to remove timber and vegetation that may hold floodgates open. The lifting equipment allows our staff to safely keep floodgates free of debris and operating effectively.

Assets like this help Rous to manage flood mitigation infrastructure across the Richmond River floodplain.

We are happy to announce that the w**d control project at Tunglebung Recreation Reserve in Kyogle Shire has successfully been completed.

👉 Work across the 2.5-hectare site primarily targeted Tropical soda apple, Cat’s claw creeper, Giant devil's fig and Chinese celtis, to prevent them from spreading into surrounding farmland, native vegetation and waterways.

🍃 The w**d control will improve the reserve’s biodiversity, creating a more enjoyable space for visitors and the local community.

🌳 This project was funded by the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund and delivered by LG Rural Contracting. Kyogle Council

This International Dog Day (26 August), we’re celebrating Connor, the English Springer Spaniel conservation detection dog who previously assisted our W**d Biosecurity team in finding invasive w**ds across the region.

🥰 Connor has since retired, but we’d like to say a big thank you for his service and dedication, and most importantly, for being such a good boy.

Rous recently collaborated with partners at SQNNSWHub Southern Cross University and Local Land Services NSW to deliver workshops for landholders, demonstrating simple methods to slow and spread the flow of water through the landscape.

🎬 This video reflects on some of the key principles and methods we have implemented at different scales across numerous Northern Rivers Watershed Initiative project sites.

🍃 👏 Thanks to Erika and Richard for hosting the workshop and the efforts of contractors and participants to complete the structures and planting.

🌳 Our W**d Biosecurity team are currently working across more than 40 properties in Nimbin–Blue K**b to control infestations of Paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera).

🫢 Paper mulberry is a priority w**d that can thrive in disturbed areas, including unmanaged farmland, roadsides and forest gaps, as well as under shaded forest canopies.

👉 Controlling these infestations will give native plants more opportunity to regenerate, helping restore habitat for native wildlife. It will also reduce the large amounts of pollen produced by Paper mulberry, which can trigger allergic reactions for some people.

➡ Paper mulberry is listed as an eradication target. If you think you’ve seen it, please contact Rous on (02) 6623 3800 or report it online using our 'Report a W**d' webpage.

💧 Yesterday, our Water Operators responded to two separate issues on the water network, affecting residents across the Lismore LGA.

📸 The video and images below show our crew working to resolve the issues and restore water services. We’re pleased to say water services were returned to normal at approximately 6pm.

👉 A big thank you to the local community for your patience and understanding.

👏 And a special thank you to our dedicated Water Operators for their hard work and commitment to keeping our community’s water supply running. Lismore City Council
