City of Hobart Bushcare

City of Hobart Bushcare Volunteers caring for nature - no experience or bookings required. Morning and afternoon tea is provided and gloves and tools are supplied.

The City of Hobart Bushcare program provides an opportunity for the community to volunteer with the Council to help enhance wildlife habitat, protect threatened flora, build and maintain tracks, and help make Hobart's bushland areas a better place. Fourteen Bushcare groups volunteer in bushlands including:

🌿Waterworks Valley Landcare: Working in the quarry, caring for young trees, de-heading and w**ding red hot poker.
📍Meet: Main Quarry, near 51 Waterworks Rd.
🕙Time: 10am - 12.30pm

🌿Ridgeway Bushcare: Removing Spanish heath and gorse under power lines on Chimney Pot Hill Rd.
📍Meet: Chimney Pot Hill Rd, near fireworks viewing spot, 1.2km from Ridgeway.
🕙Time: 2-4.30pm

⛏The spring working bee program is out now.

From w**ding to bird watching, maintaining plantings or collecting a free native plant for your garden, there are plenty of activities across our Hobart reserves.

👉Cornelian Bay Bushcare - Meet 10am at the summit of the Queens Domain to work around the radio station on some small outbreaks of significant w**ds like agapanthus, briar rose and cactus.

👉Lambert Gully Bushcare - Meet at 2pm for w**d control on the rivulet banks at the Peel St Bridge. Easy work. Meet at the end of Lambert Ave, Sandy Bay.

Our wonderful South Hobart and Lenah Valley Bushcare groups will be working this Sunday 16 August. All welcome to come along and help.

👉South Hobart Bushcare: Plant maintenance and w**ding at the Hobart Rivulet above the Brewery, north side next to the 'bumpy track'.
📍Meet: Hobart Rivulet above the Brewery on the other side of the bridge. 10am - 12.30pm.

👉Lenah Valley Bushcare: Creekside w**ding and a little bit of planting.
📍Meet: Laneway near 313 Lenah Valley Rd. 2-4.30pm.

🌿 We're making great progress removing environmentally harmful and destructive crack willows from the Hobart Rivulet. 💪🌱

Throughout July and August we are:

🌳 Removing all large crack willow trees between Anglesea and Weld streets along the Hobart Rivulet.

🌿 Planting locally native trees with South Hobart Primary School and The Friends’ School.

🤝 Working closely with the Hobart Rivulet Bushcare group to remove other environmental w**ds and protect platypus habitat.

We kept one large willow tree for the resident tawny frogmouths, who have made their home by the rivulet.

A few people were worried about their safety, but we have reports they have relocated into a nearby native tree where we expect them to be right at home.

🌊 Crack willows (Salix fragilis) choke waterways and form impenetrable thickets that lead to flooding and bank erosion, increasing the risks to people, homes and infrastructure during major flood events.

It is also a highly invasive w**d. Its roots spread throughout waterways, pushing out native trees and shrubs, reducing oxygen available for fish and other aquatic wildlife, and making it hard for platypus to find food and create burrows.

🧤 In some cases we can remove crack willows by hand-w**ding, but where big trees threaten critical stormwater infrastructure we need chainsaws and heavy equipment. 🚜🪚

This project is equally funded by the City of Hobart and the Australian Government through the Disaster Ready Fund and administered by the Tasmanian Government Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Together we're improving waterway health, reducing flood risk and creating better habitat for native wildlife. 💚🐾

Friends of Wellington Park Bushcare is on for another adventure this Friday!
If you love searching through steep, dense wet forest with no tracks, picking off the leeches, looking for a small w**d with a team of other dedicated bushies, then please come along!
We are mapping the outer edge of the Spurge laurel (Daphne laureola) infestation which we hope to eradicate. It's present only on private properties on Grays Rd. This w**d is highly invasive in similar climates in NZ and USA but not yet established in Tasmania.
Friday 14th, 9.15am sharp, Pillinger Drive (junction of Reservoir track.)
Please consider carpooling as parking is limited.
You could park at Fern Glade carpark, walk up Fern Glade track, take first right to Pillinger track and walk up to the meeting point.
Morning tea & equipment provided.
Please wear long trousers & sturdy boots.
