Amina Keygan: Councillor Burnie City Council Councillor on Burnie City Council. Candidate for Deputy Mayor. Here to serve our City. As part of my Council duties, I Chair the View Road Reserve Working Group.

I am a consulting demographer, based in Burnie, that specialises in strategic business decision making, informed by evidence and data. I have extensive experience in advising local government areas (LGAs) on their population structure as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with population change. I hold a PhD in Demography (population) at the Australian National University's School

of Demography, and am a member of the Australian Population Association. I currently hold a position with Tasmanian Labor as a Policy and Strategic Engagement Advisor. I am proud to sit as a member on the Emusicians Parent's Association, as well as on the Burnie Netball Association, and as a member of the Local Drug Action Team in Burnie. In my spare time I love participating and competing in power lifting and strongman sports. Burnie IGNITE brought students from Grades 5 through 12 together tonight to show off a year’s worth of curiosity, and the standard was extraordinary.

This event is the only one of its kind in Tasmania, built by GreenSTEM Education on the legacy of the UTAS Science & Engineering Awards and the BIG Science Fair. Investigations, engineering projects, digital creations, real solutions to real problems, all designed and built by young people right here in the North West.

Watching the awards handed out tonight, what struck me most was the range. Kids tackling climate questions, robotics, health science, pure creative experimentation, all in the same room.

Burnie City Council is proud to be part of making this possible alongside Inspiring Tasmania, Burnie Works and everyone else behind IGNITE.

Congratulations to all the award recipients. To the parents and teachers who support these young people and encourage them to never stop asking questions.

This is what our future looks like, and it’s pretty bright.

Today, on Father’s Day, I stood at the Nepal Flood Memorial Shrine with members of Burnie Nepalese Community and so many others who chose time away from their families to support our community.

We gathered, brought flowers and lit candles in silent prayer for those who have passed and those who still remain missing.

I had the honour of MC’ing the gathering, alongside Roger Jaensch MP, Astri Kirkland and so many others who turned up to show our Nepalese friends that they are not carrying this alone.

To the Burnie Nepalese Community, thank you for the trust in letting me stand with you today.

🏎️ TEAM TASMANIA IS GOING TO GOODWOOD — AND WE’RE GETTING THEM THERE

This October, a group of young Burnie locals will do something no Australian team has ever done: compete at the Greenpower International Final at Goodwood Motor Circuit.

These students were also the first in Australia to ever race in . Three years ago they helped build the first cars, race in the first events, and lay the groundwork for a program now reaching schools across the country. Now that journey takes them from Burnie to Goodwood, representing Tasmania and Australia on the world stage.

Getting a team, cars and equipment from Tasmania to the UK is a serious undertaking, and the costs of travel, accommodation and logistics are real. That’s where we come in.

Every dollar helps get these kids to the UK. $5, $20, $100, whatever you can give lightens the load on these students and their families.

Did you know that the little viewing platform at the Penguin Centre gets more use than almost anywhere else in West Park.

Lots of people told us during the West Park consultation that it’s one of the spaces they use most. Families down there most evenings. School groups. Visitors who came to Burnie for exactly this.

So when the Masterplan started taking shape, improving that space was always going to be near the top of the list.

This Saturday, the Development Application goes up for public view. It covers a new sheltered viewing area, tiered seating, better information panels, new vegetation, and upgrades to the existing centre. The plan keeps the current observation centre and coastal pathway in place, and the design is built to be low impact during construction.

This is one part of the wider West Park Precinct Masterplan, and I want to keep pushing to see it delivered.

Hey mums! Tuesday mornings in Burnie just got better.

Every week at 10am, mums are meeting at the West Beach octopus statues for a walk together. Bub in the pram or kids at school, first baby or fourth, everyone is welcome. No cost, no pressure. Just a walk and a chat with people who understand exactly where you're at.

from themumconnectiontas runs this. She's a local businesswoman and a mum, and wanted to build something that brings people together. Every Tuesday she shows up and connects mums from right across Burnie and the region.

That's not a small thing. Community doesn't happen on its own. It happens because someone keeps turning up.

You’ve probably seen the new sign at Burnie Arts. What you might not know is that it was made and installed right here, by a local business, Todd Rogers Signs.

That matters to me more than it might seem.

Every time council spends money with a local business, that money stays in Burnie. It goes to a local wage, a local family, the next local job. It circles back through the city instead of leaving it.

I feel so strongly about this that I helped make sure it is built into how we work. Council’s procurement process now considers local content, which means being local and using local people actually counts when Council decides who does the job. It is not just a ‘nice idea’. It is part of how the decision gets made.

When we can back a Burnie business, we should.

Next time you are at Burnie Arts, take a look. That is local work, done well.

Something I hear a lot is that people want more happening in Burnie at night.

Well, Fleur by Forbidden Sweets has you covered.

From tonight, Fleur is staying open late, 5:30pm to 9pm, Thursday through Saturday. The menu they’ve put together is made for sitting back with no reason to rush.

Tapas in the middle of the table for sharing. Think patatas bravas, corn ribs, halloumi skewers, crispy chicken sliders, fish tacos. Bigger plates too, from kefta meatballs to lamb curry and the Mediterranean board.

The cocktail list is unapologetically Fleur. A key lime pie mojito, a tiramisu espresso martini, a very Tasmanian 40 South iced tea. Tasmanian wines and boutique beers alongside.

And because this is still Fleur by Forbidden Sweets, dessert is never an afterthought.

Good food in the middle of the table, a drink in your hand, something sweet to finish, good people around you. That is Fleur Nights.

Some people take years to fall in love with a place. Josh and his family did it over one Christmas visit.

They were here seeing family last December. On the drive back to the airport to fly home, their daughter asked if they really had to go. They decided they didn't.

Less than a month ago they moved here, and Josh has already opened Burnie Garage out at Wivenhoe.

Josh ran a mechanic shop in Melbourne for over a decade. He was also an endurance race car driver, sponsored by Mobil 1, racing since he was 16 when his first boss got him into speedway. A few of us have already started working on him to join Targa.

What I love most is how he talks about being here. He described the drive along the highway to his mates back in Melbourne as getting to drive the Great Ocean Road every single day.

And the welcome has been exactly what I'd hope for. Another local mechanic has already reached out to offer Josh a hand if he ever needs it in the shop. That's the Burnie I know.

Stories like this are my favourite. People who see what we have here and want to be part of it. If you need any car work done (even if you don’t), go say hello to Josh and have a chat.
