Burnie City Council’s page exists to provide information on Council initiatives, events, programs and news. It is used as an important tool for Council to actively engage with the community, serving as a place for discussion, enquiries and an active exchange of ideas. 🗳️ Burnie Election Candidate Forum

Want to hear from the people putting their hand up to represent the community?

Business Northwest will host a Burnie Election Candidate Forum, providing an opportunity to hear directly from candidates, learn more about their views and priorities, and help inform your vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections.

📣 Nominations for the 2026 Local Government Elections will be announced on Tuesday, 22 September on the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) site: tec.tas.gov.au/

📬 Postal ballot packs will begin arriving via mail from Monday 5 October, so now is a good time to get informed before voting.

🛼 Community Sport Spotlight ✨

For some, community sport means taking to the field or court. For the Van Diemen Rollers, it means getting on wheels! 🛼

The Burnie-based flat-track roller derby club welcomes anyone aged 16 and over, whether you’re looking to skate socially, compete, learn new skills, or get involved behind the scenes.

Earlier this year, the Van Diemen Rollers took a team to Adelaide to compete in The Great Southern Slam, the largest roller derby tournament in the Southern Hemisphere - a fantastic achievement for the club! 👏

From learn-to-skate courses and roller discos to training and games, there are plenty of ways to get involved - and you don't have to be a skater to be part of the team.

The club is welcoming and inclusive, creating a place where people can build confidence, make connections, and have fun while trying something a little different.

Clubs like the Van Diemen Rollers are helping build the active, connected and inclusive community that sits at the heart of our Making a Better Burnie 2044 vision.

Keep an eye out as we continue to showcase more of the people and clubs that make community sport such an important part of our city.

A place where we get to show you some of the things that Council has been up to recently.

🚲 Fix up and ride on! Council's Parks team has installed a new bike repair station at South Burnie Beach, giving riders a handy pit stop to keep their wheels turning.

🏉 Ready for a kick? New goal posts are now in place at Acton Recreation Ground, thanks to Council's Parks team. The perfect spot for the community to grab a footy and have a go!

🪵 Ticking another one off the Capital Works Program! The final coat of varnish is now complete at Upper Burnie Memorial Hall, and we think the floor has come up a treat.

🌿 Coming together nicely! Council's Parks team has given the memorial screen at Burnie Park another coat of paint and added roses and a climber called Happy Duo. We're now 98% there, with just a few more filler plants to go next week.

♿ Making access easier! Council's Civil team has installed a new ramp on Beattie Street, helping improve accessibility for the community.

🌏 Exploring a North West Multicultural Community Hub

Burnie is home to people from many cultures and backgrounds - and that diversity is something to celebrate.

Burnie City Council and the Multicultural Council of Tasmania (MCOT) have signed an MOU to explore the potential for a multicultural hub in Burnie.

For MCOT board member Astri Kirkland, the idea of a multicultural hub is personal.

❝ When I arrived in Tasmania 22 years ago, I remember how overwhelming it was to start from scratch without knowing anyone.

A multicultural hub is about so much more than just getting information. It’s about having a place where you feel seen, welcomed, and backed by your community. It gives people a sense of safety and home right when they need it most and helps us build a region where everyone truly feels they belong.❞

Burnie's Penguin Observation Centre moves into planning

Plans to enhance the Burnie Penguin Observation Centre are moving into the planning process, with a Development Application to be advertised this Saturday (5 September).

The project forms part of the West Park Precinct Master Plan, which was shaped through consultation with the West Park User Group and broader community.

During consultation, the Penguin Observation Area was identified as one of the precinct’s most-used spaces, with 37.6% saying they used the area.

Improving the Penguin Observation Centre is one of the priority projects for 2026–27 as Council starts delivering the Master Plan.

The proposed works include:

✅ a new sheltered viewing area
✅ additional tiered seating
✅ penguin information and interpretation
✅ new vegetation
✅ improvements to the existing observation centre.

The design aims to have a low impact on the existing site, with minimal disruption during delivery, while retaining the existing observation centre and coastal pathway.

The Development Application will be publicly advertised this Saturday via the link below, giving the community an opportunity to view the proposal.

🕯️ A time for remembrance and solidarity

The Burnie Nepalese Community will hold a Nepal Flood Memorial Shrine this Sunday, providing an opportunity for the community to come together to remember those who have lost their lives and show support for the families and communities affected by the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.

The memorial will include candle and flower tributes, prayers, a minute of silence, and messages of remembrance and hope.

Everyone is welcome to attend and stand together in compassion, remembrance, and solidarity, with our local Nepalese community and those affected in Nepal.

🚧 Traffic update – Reeves Street, Thursday 3 September.

TasNetworks is undertaking pole replacement works on Reeves Street, between the Bass Highway and Strahan Street.

Reeves Street is currently closed to northbound traffic and will remain closed throughout today.

If you’re travelling from the Brooklyn area towards Wivenhoe, Devonport or Bunnings Warehouse, please detour via Edwardes Street or Wilson Street to access the Bass Highway.

Further works will continue tomorrow, however Reeves Street will remain open in both directions.

Please allow extra time and follow traffic management in place.
