Cradle Coast Authority’s final Representatives’ Meeting before the upcoming local government elections provided an important opportunity to reflect on the dedication, leadership, and service of our representatives, and to recognise those who will not be seeking re-election.

Chair of the CCA Board, Ian Vanderbeek, paid special tribute to Mayor Mary Duniam for her longstanding contribution as a Chief Representative and her unwavering commitment to the Cradle Coast region.

“Over the past nine months, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Mary and seeing firsthand the passion, integrity and dedication she brings to regional leadership. Her contribution to Cradle Coast Authority over many years has been significant and deeply valued, helping to shape outcomes that will benefit our communities well into the future. On behalf of the Board and the organisation, I would like to sincerely thank Mary for her service, leadership, and advocacy for our region. We are grateful for the legacy she leaves and wish her every success, happiness, and fulfilment in the next chapter of her journey.”

Representatives, the Chair and the CEO also acknowledged and thanked Mayor Mary Duniam, Mayor Peter Freshney and Mayor Marcus Blackie, all who are not seeking re-election, for their valued contributions to Cradle Coast Authority. Their collective service, leadership and commitment to the region have been greatly appreciated, and they were warmly wished all the very best for the future.

The Cradle Coast of Tasmania is home to people who are committed to making the west coast, north west Tasmania and King Island better places to live, work and study. Brand Tasmania is seeking to understand why people choose to live in Tasmania and what might motivate them to leave, with the research intended to help inform decision-makers.

The survey will provide valuable insight into the complexities of living in this island state, asking people what they find easy or challenging about life in Tasmania. Brand Tasmania has commissioned Dr Lisa Denny and the University of Tasmania's Tasmania Policy Exchange (TPE) to investigate the experiences of people living across the state.

People are what makes a place come alive. Many individuals have been drawn to Tasmania for its pristine wilderness and quiet culture. While others have had to find what they desired elsewhere. The research undertaken will explore the factors that influence people's decisions to move to or leave from Tasmania, including work, university, career opportunities and other aspects of life.

Cradle Coast Authority will benefit from the research outcomes, using these insights to help guide future decisions and strengthen our understanding of the needs and experiences of people across the region.

The unvarnished, honest opinions and perspectives shared through the survey will help build a clearer picture of life in Tasmania and contribute to shaping a better future for everyone here.

To better understand what Tasmanians need in the future, we’re inviting you to participate in a short survey about your experiences living here. We’d love to know what is easy or hard about living in Tasmania, how connected you feel to your community, and the things that may influence you to leave or stay in your local area and in Tasmania.

The official opening of the Stanley Effluent Disposal Station by Anne Urquhart MP, Federal Member for Braddon, earlier today formally marks the completion of an important regional infrastructure project, one that supports the transport industry, environmental compliance and local economic activity across the North West. The project has required close collaboration between all levels of government, industry partners, landholders and local stakeholders to deliver fit-for-purpose infrastructure for the region.

The Stanley Effluent Disposal Station includes onsite water treatment and an accompanying waste management system, supporting livestock transporters and plant operators to meet their obligations to manage effluent and maintain clean vehicles as they move between farms and across the region.

The facility has been delivered as part of a $617,000 investment by the Commonwealth Government and with financial assistance from Circular Head Council to strengthen regional infrastructure and support the agricultural supply chain in Tasmania’s North-West.

The project was enabled by sustained advocacy from CCA, which secured funding through the Australian Government, along with support from industry partners and landholders to complete the Stanley site.

Anne Urquhart MP, member for Braddon said, “This facility delivers exactly the kind of practical, on the ground infrastructure our region needs to support farmers, livestock transporters and agricultural businesses.”

CCA’s Phil Reid echoed the Minister's comments, saying, “The Braddon Truck Wash project has been a major undertaking, delivering four purpose-built facilities across the North-West.”

Cradle Coast Authority is excited to announce a new partnership with Burnie City Council to deliver significant upgrades to the region's shared pathway network. This $1.3 million investment was secured through the Australian Government's Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

The project will enhance the pathway experience by improving accessibility, safety, health and wellbeing outcomes for the community.

The funding will support:
• The development of a new app and website, providing digital navigation, safety information and regional points of interest.
• A feasibility study of the existing shared pathway between Wivenhoe and Howth to identify upgrade priorities and the cost of addressing missing links.
• Infrastructure improvements including new signage, wayfinding and interpretive elements.
• New user amenities such as bike racks, bicycle repair stations, seating and water bubblers.
• Lighting and visibility upgrades in key sections of the pathway to improve safety.

This investment is an important first step towards creating a safer, more connected and enjoyable shared pathway for residents and visitors, encouraging more people to walk, ride and explore the Cradle Coast region.

This is an opportunity to support regional intelligence, provide strategic advice and coordinated advocacy on matters that influence economic development across North West and West Tasmania.

We are seeking members with experience, skills, knowledge and/or interests in one or more of the following areas: Housing, construction, energy, energy infrastructure, small business, tourism, mining and manufacturing, education, social development and primary industries, including agriculture.

From Carpark to Penguin Habitat🐧

CCA CEO Phil Reid recently attended the opening of the extended little penguin habitat at the University of Tasmania’s Cradle Coast campus. The newly restored sanctuary provides Burnie’s little penguins with more space to live, nest and thrive safely.

UTAS Cradle Coast Campus has transformed an old asphalt carpark in Burnie into expanded habitat for little penguins, with hundreds of native plants creating a safer, healthier coastal ecosystem. Rather than prioritising more space for cars, the project has restored hundreds of native plants and created a safer, richer habitat for penguins and the many other species that depend on this coastal ecosystem. It also provides a living buffer against erosion, helps filter pollutants, sequesters carbon, provides shelter and shade, and creates a beautiful connection between people and nature.

It’s a great reminder that restoring nature can support biodiversity, protect our coastline, connect people with nature and strengthen community wellbeing.
We’re especially proud to recognise Dr Perviz Marker, a CCNRM NRM Committee member and strong supporter of natural resource management. Her passion and advocacy are a great example of the role individuals can play in creating positive change.
