Casino Rural Fire Brigade

Casino Rural Fire Brigade The Casino Rural Fire Brigade is a volunteer service protecting the community. We range from grasslands to bush areas.

The Casino Brigade takes in many areas around the area (North, South, East and West of Casino). Our area is made up of cattle properties, chicken farms, greyhound breeders and trainers, orchards and private dwellings. Our station is situated beside the Northern Rivers Fire Control Centre on Neville Bienke Memorial Drive South Casino. As most rural fire brigades we not only attend incidents in our own area but anywhere in the Northern Rivers area and sometimes beyond.

At approximately 18:30 on Sunday the 9th, Casino was paged to a grass fire at Leeville. On arrival, the property owner was located and had lit the fire to protect his property for summer but had no means to control the fire, thinking the wet conditions would just put the fire out.

No control lines, long grass and very wet ground made dealing with the fire very difficult. Approximately 300m of hoses were joined together to put out the front of the fire while backpack blowers were used to extinguish the remaining edges, burning just over 25ha.

It is an extremely important message to all landowners that wet ground alone will not contain a fire but will make getting fires under control very difficult for crews.

A massive thanks to all crews in attendance for extinguishing the fire in tough conditions.

On Monday the 27th, Casino was paged to a structure fire in Ellangowan. Unfortunately, on arrival, the house was fully involved, with an external attack underway to try to limit the spread to further exposures. Crews worked for a number of hours to get the fire under control and fully extinguish the structure.

Thankfully, all occupants were not home at the time of the blaze and are safe, but our thoughts are with them in this difficult time.

A large RFS presence will be in and around town on Sunday; no need to be concerned. This is a valuable learning opportunity for the district.

This Sunday, more than 20 fire trucks and 100 firefighters from across the Northern Rivers will come together in Casino for the Northern Rivers District Exercise.

As we prepare for the upcoming fire season, this exercise will ensure our members are ready to respond when called upon and that our equipment is operating as it should. The day will provide realistic training opportunities to strengthen operational capability, teamwork and preparedness so we can continue to protect our communities.

While we’re preparing, we encourage everyone in our community to do the same. Now is the time to prepare your property, reduce bush fire hazards where appropriate, and ensure you have a current Bush Fire Survival Plan in place before the fire season begins.

A special thank you to Richmond Valley Council for their valued support in helping make this exercise possible.

If you’re in the Casino area on Sunday, you may notice an increased emergency service presence. Please be aware that this is a planned training exercise, and there is no cause for concern.

At 2144 Casino was activated to a chimney fire Benns Rd ShannonBrook.
Thankfully, a nearby Woodview member arrived on scene and extinguished the fire burning through into the garage with a garden hose before any major damage occurred. When Casino arrived, a thermal imaging camera was used to ensure no fire ingress into the roof cavity and to check and deal with any remaining hot spots in the wall cavity.

It's a very timely reminder that with the cold weather starting to set in, you should have your fireplace serviced yearly to ensure it's in good working order, ready for the cooler weather.

At 20:52, Casino was called to a structure fire at Mallanganee.
Information received was that an old abandoned house had caught alight, and when first arriving units got on scene, they found the house already completely destroyed. Due to the age of the house and the suspected presence of asbestos, crews held back until Essential Energy confirmed no power and Casino 1 arrived to cool the structure with the monitor; other units worked hard setting up a relay to supply water to Casino 1 so crews could use CABA to cool the remaining hot spots safely.

Casino held its AGM last night.

Congratulations to Joel, who has handed over the red helmet after three years as Casino Captain, as he steps into his new role as Northern Rivers Group 4 Group Officer. Joel will still be involved with Casino going forward, and we wish him all the best in his new role.

Congratulations and thank you to all members who have stepped up and taken on a role this year — your dedication and commitment to the brigade do not go unnoticed.

On the night, 15 members were proudly presented with a NSW Premier's Flood Emergency Citation in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the 2022 flood response. A well-deserved award for an incredible effort with countless hours over weeks helping the community to restore some form of normality.

Today marks First Responders Day.

It is a time to stop and thank all the responders who are there for people in their worst moments in life.

From the Police, Ambulance, Rescue organizations, and Fire, all these organizations play a massive role in making Australia the greatest country in the world. So as we pause and thank all current responders, it's a chance to think: is it something you can do with organizations all across the country needing people to stand up and help others who need help?

From all of us at Casino RFB, we thank all the fellow first responders and hope today can make you think: is there something I can do to help?

Happy Mothers Day 💐

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, dedication and compassion of mums everywhere, but especially those in our family.

Across the state, thousands of mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, stepmothers and aunties give their time to help protect their communities. Whether they're on the frontline or supporting behind the scenes their contributions are extraordinary.

Today, we thank them for all they do, not just as RFS members, but as leaders and role models in our brigades and communities.
