🌟 YOUTH INTERN PROGRAM - TERM 3 🌟

Here’s another exciting opportunity for 15–16 year olds to get an inside look at volunteering with the NSW SES and other Emergency Services with the NSW SES Youth Internship Program – Term 3.

Do you know a young person aged 15–16 who’s ready to build confidence, learn real world skills, and explore a future in emergency services?

The Casino SES Unit is now taking Expressions of Interest for our fully funded Youth Internship Program running in Term 3, from early August.

Over 8 weeks, students will:
Learn practical emergency service skills
Build leadership and teamwork abilities
Gain confidence in challenging but supportive environments
Develop life skills such as communication, problem solving and safety awareness
Get a behind the scenes look at volunteering with the NSW SES.

This program is ideal for teens interested in emergency services, community service, or simply wanting to grow their capability, leadership and resilience.

🐄 LARGE ANIMAL RESCUE TRAINING 🐄

Last Monday evening, members from Casino Unit travelled to NSW SES Kyogle Unit to take part in a combined training exercise with Kyogle volunteers.

Kyogle put together an excellent scenario based on Large Animal Rescue Operations (LARO). The exercise involved a young "cow" that had become bogged in mud within a drain and required rescue.
Using specialist Large Animal Rescue equipment, members worked together to safely secure a rescue sling around the animal. A tirfor winch was then used to carefully drag the "cow" up the embankment on slide boards and back onto firm, dry ground, where it was free to return to the paddock.

The exercise provided a valuable refresher for members already qualified in LARO and offered a great opportunity for other volunteers to gain an insight into the techniques and equipment used in large animal rescues before undertaking the qualification themselves.

Training alongside neighbouring units is a fantastic way to share knowledge, build capability, and strengthen relationships across the region. A big thank you to all the volunteers from Kyogle Unit for their hospitality and for sharing their skills and experience with our members.

🐮 BEEF WEEK 2026 WRAP-UP 🐮

Casino SES had a fantastic day last Saturday, taking part in the Beef Week celebrations! 🤩

We welcomed plenty of visitors to our stall, where we shared information about storm and flood preparedness, discussed emergency plans, and highlighted the importance of being ready for severe weather events.⛈️
The kids had a great time testing their skills on the co****le game and checking out the miniature chainsaws.

However, the star attraction for both young and old was undoubtedly our High Clearance Vehicle, SES59W – affectionately known as "The Mog".
Standing an impressive 3.15 metres tall and 6.68 metres long, with a tare weight of more than 7 tonnes and a wading depth of 1.2 metres, this remarkable vehicle plays a vital role in NSW SES flood operations and rescue missions across diverse and challenging environments.

We were also proud to have a variety of NSW SES vehicles and vessels participating in the Brenda Armfield Street Parade. While not all of these assets are based at Casino, they represent just a small part of the ever-evolving NSW SES fleet available to support communities throughout the Northern Rivers.🚌🛻🛥🚛

To round out Beef Week Saturday, we were thrilled to have a fantastic SES representative in the Mr Beef competition, Topints. While he may not have taken home the crown, he certainly won over plenty of fans!💪

Mr Beef isn't all about muscles (but it does help).💪

It's more about charisma and flair and entertaining the crowd.

👑 The louder the cheers, the better chance you have of taking out the Mr Beef crown! 👑

Casino SES are proud to announce that we have a hot contender vying to take the title tonight of Mr Beef!

Our very own Topints will be hitting the catwalk from 5.30pm at the Casino RSM Club.

We'd love everyone to come on down and show some love to Topints as he shows a new side to volunteering with NSW SES.

"Let's go crazy for Topints"!! 🕺🏋‍♀️🐮💪👑

Next year we challenge other Emergency Services to put in a contender to compete for the title!

🚨 CASINO SES BECOMES TRAINING HUB 🚨

Casino Unit has been a hive of activity over recent weeks.
We’ve proudly played host to a number of crucial training workshops and inter-unit activities, bringing dozens of volunteers together to learn important skills and gain valuable knowledge and qualifications, along with connecting with old friends and making new friends.

Over two weekends, a Road Crash Rescue (RCR) course was delivered at our Unit for members from our neighbouring Tabulam Unit. This training is a critical step towards getting the Tabulam Unit online for RCR response — now only weeks away!

We also delivered an Operate Communications Equipment (OCE) course. OCE is one of the required foundational courses all members must complete, providing volunteers with the skills and knowledge to effectively operate our radio systems.

Another foundational course, Field Beacon, was also delivered over recent weeks. Beacon is the system we use to log callouts and task teams to incidents.

Lastly, we held a Drive Operational Vehicle workshop. This important workshop not only teaches members the safe and correct way to drive under lights and sirens, but also develops skills in reversing, towing, and operational vehicle handling.

During these workshops, we welcomed volunteers from Casino, Tabulam, Urbenville, Kyogle and Lismore. At times, there were more than 30 people at Casino Unit learning, teaching, catering, and assisting. It’s exciting to play a part in the continued growth and capability development of volunteers within NSW SES.

Congratulations to all the volunteers who successfully completed their training.

Additionally, our weekly Monday night training last week again saw over 25 people on site.
Volunteers from the Northern Rivers Capability Unit showcased a new NSW SES asset — the Internet Connectivity Trailer. This trailer can be deployed to areas with limited or no internet connectivity during events or operations, such as remote land searches.
We also invited our Cluster Units — Kyogle, Tabulam and Urbenville — to attend the night, which concluded with a social barbecue, plenty of laughs, and great conversation.

It has been fantastic to play a major role in supporting the continued growth, capability, and connection of volunteers within NSW SES.
