NSW SES Casino Unit

NSW SES Casino Unit The NSW SES Casino Unit is the local combat agency for floods, storms and tsunami. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency and rescue service dedicated to assisting the community. Casino Unit is made up entirely of volunteers, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our major responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides the majority of general rescue effort in the rural parts of the state. Thi

s includes road accident rescue, vertical rescue, bush search and rescue, evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include NSW Police Force, NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement Programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for NSW SES. response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

🚤 WHO LET THE BOATS OUT 🚤

Today, Casino Unit participated in a state-wide, multi-agency flood boat exercise designed to showcase and enhance flood rescue and boat operator skills.

There was more than 170 boats, utilising 66 launch sites and 650 personnel on the waterways across the state. And they were all tasked and coordinated by over 70 people working in Flood Cells within a number of IMTs.

Participants completed a variety of scenarios involving manoeuvring, launching and docking vessels, breakdown drills, recovering persons overboard, radio communications, fire drills, first aid and many others.

We performed todays exercise on the Richmond River in Coraki and were joined by a crew and boat from NSW SES Coraki Unit as well.

A great day on the water for all involved and also big thanks to those who worked in the IMT managing and coordinating this complex exercise.

Days like this are crucial for our ongoing training and refining skills so we are the best we can be when we are needed the most.

If this sounds like something that interests you, and you like helping out your community, we'd love you to come and have a chat to us about joining the NSW SES!

FORTEM AUSTRALIA

Last Monday night we welcomed a special guest from Fortem Australia to meet and chat with our volunteers.

Fortem Australia is an independent not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of first responders, emergency service workers and volunteers, and their families.

First responder work can be incredibly rewarding but it can also be confronting, traumatic and dangerous. Fortems early intervention and preventative mental health approach helps to promote resilience, recovery, and overall wellbeing, while reducing stigma around mental health.

We learnt about some of the ways we can support each other and ourselves, as well as some of the other great programs and activities that Fortem offers.

We also enjoyed some delicious pizzas generously donated from Domino's Pizza Casino and played some jenga!

Thankyou Fortem (Kerryann) and thankyou Dominos Casino.

Do you live in the Richmond or Wilson River catchments? This video shows how rainfall in the catchment can influence flooding. There is forecasted rain and thunderstorms for Sunday and Monday which could lead to flash flooding across the region. Here's an opportunity to learn your risk and to start to get prepared.

🎖NSW PREMIERS FLOOD EMERGENCY CITATION🎖

Last night we paused our regular training to host a small awards ceremony at Unit Headquarters, where a number of members were presented with the NSW Premier’s Flood Emergency Citation for their contribution to the 2022–2023 NSW Flood Emergency Response.

With the 4-year anniversary of the devastating Northern Rivers floods approaching, the evening also provided an opportunity for members to reflect on their experiences alongside peers, family and invited guests.

We were honoured to be joined by Councillor Robert Mustow (Mayor RVC), Councillor Steve Morrisey (Deputy Mayor RVC), Vaughan Macdonald (General Manager RVC) and Richie Williamson MP.
Superintendent Kristine McDonald of NSW State Emergency Service led the ceremony.

Congratulations to Donna, Karen, Kirsty, Venus, Michael, Katrina, James and Larry on receiving your citation.

Additionally, Kirsty and Katrina were presented with their 5-Year Long Service Pin. Thank you both for your continued service and commitment to NSW SES.

✴️RECRUITMENT INFORMATION DAY✴️

A great time was had today at our Recruitment Information Day.

We welcomed a number of curious community members who came along to find out just what’s involved in being an NSW SES Volunteer.

🦺 Our potential recruits were taken through a variety of practical scenarios covering different areas of what SES does, including knots, patient carrying, roof kits and radios. Everyone had the opportunity to get involved, have a go, and ask questions as they worked through each activity.
📽 We even had a visit from the NBN Local News crew!

👏 A big thank you to our current volunteer members who gave up their Saturday morning to share their skills and knowledge with those attending.

If you were unable to make today’s Information Day but find yourself thinking, “maybe I could do that?” — you haven’t missed the boat! We accept new member applications all year round.

✅️Jump onto the NSW SES website to apply to become a Unit Member and start your journey with some great people in a great organisation
