⚠️ WARNING TO THE COOMA AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITY

There have been a number of burglaries, thefts and vehicle thefts around the Cooma area recently, including multiple incidents at local properties. Overnight, the Cooma Fire Brigade station was also broken into and equipment was stolen.

Please be extra vigilant, secure your homes, vehicles, sheds and equipment, and check any camera footage for suspicious people or vehicles. If you see a crime occurring, call 000. Otherwise, report information or thefts to police on 131 444.

Despite the break-in, Cooma Fire Brigade remains operational and able to respond to emergencies.

Notice to the residents of Kyabram and particularly around the McEwen Rd South Boundary Rd area. Tomorrow night commencing at approximately 7-8pm there will be an extremely large bonfire at 1463 McEwen Rd. The fire will be logged with the burn off notification hotline and the resident will have sufficient resources on hand to control the fire. From all accounts the glow will be quite visible due to the size of the burn pile.

Last night we were lucky enough to be invited over to Tatura Fire Brigade for a floor map TEWT.

A TEWT is basically a practical “what would you do?” exercise, we used a large floor map to work through a fire scenario, talk through different options and learn from each other’s experience.

It was a really good night, with plenty of discussion, a few different ideas thrown around and a lot learned from some very experienced people.

We’re pretty fortunate at Cooma to have neighbouring brigades like Tatura and Merrigum looking out for us and helping us build our skills.

Tonight our members took part in live fire pressure vessel training, gaining hands-on experience in managing a realistic emergency scenario.

Training like this builds confidence, teamwork and practical skills that simply can’t be replicated in the classroom.

A special thank you to one of our own brigade members, who shared their expertise and experience as an FRV firefighter to deliver an outstanding training session. We’re incredibly fortunate to have members willing to invest their time and knowledge into developing our brigade.

Every training night helps us become a safer, stronger and more capable brigade.

A great night at Cooma Fire Brigade.

We enjoyed a BBQ, plenty of laughs and, most importantly, some really productive discussion about getting ready for the coming fire season.

We’ve now got a plan to work towards over the next few months, with training, equipment and brigade readiness all on the agenda. It was fantastic to see everyone contributing ideas and helping shape the direction of our brigade.

Thanks to everyone who came along. We’re looking forward to building our capability together and being ready to serve our community when we’re needed. 🚒

Smoke Alarm Action Day is coming up this Monday, June 1st.
We know everyone’s busy, but a house fire moves faster than you think. If your smoke alarms aren't working, you won't get the warning you need. It’s as simple as that.
Take two minutes tonight to do a quick check:
Press the button: Make sure it actually beeps.
Check the date: Look at the back of the unit. If it’s more than 10 years old, the sensors wear out and the whole unit needs replacing.
Look out for your neighbours: If you have an elderly neighbour or someone nearby who can't get up on a ladder, please do them a favour and check theirs for them too.
If you’re stuck, don't have anyone nearby to help, and physically can't check your alarms, please don't risk a fall. We have a brigade BBQ night at the station this Monday evening from 6:30. Drop on by and come have a chat with us so we can figure out how to help you out.
Don't leave it to chance. Test yours tonight, change the batteries if they're flat, and let's keep Cooma safe.

We’ve seen first-hand recently how quickly a small fire can escalate.

In the past few weeks, we’ve had a cooking fire locally that was already knocked down when we arrived.
If it hadn’t been dealt with straight away, the house would likely have been fully involved by the time crews got there.

We’ve also seen another example recently where early action made a big difference.

Same lesson both times:

👉 The best time to put a fire out is when it’s small.

These are simple setups at home and in a vehicle — nothing fancy, but ready if needed.

Most fires start with everyday things — cooking, electrics, heaters —
but once they take hold, they move FAST.

💡 A couple of simple things to check:

✔ Fire extinguisher or blanket — and know how to use them
✔ Working smoke alarms
✔ A simple plan if it gets out of control

If you’ve been putting it off — add smoke alarm batteries to your next shopping list.

If a fire does take hold — get out, stay out and call 000.

Take 5 minutes tonight and have a look around your place (and your vehicle).
Small effort, big difference.
