Smoke Alarm Action Day is coming up this Monday, June 1st.
We know everyone’s busy, but a house fire moves faster than you think. If your smoke alarms aren't working, you won't get the warning you need. It’s as simple as that.
Take two minutes tonight to do a quick check:
Press the button: Make sure it actually beeps.
Check the date: Look at the back of the unit. If it’s more than 10 years old, the sensors wear out and the whole unit needs replacing.
Look out for your neighbours: If you have an elderly neighbour or someone nearby who can't get up on a ladder, please do them a favour and check theirs for them too.
If you’re stuck, don't have anyone nearby to help, and physically can't check your alarms, please don't risk a fall. We have a brigade BBQ night at the station this Monday evening from 6:30. Drop on by and come have a chat with us so we can figure out how to help you out.
Don't leave it to chance. Test yours tonight, change the batteries if they're flat, and let's keep Cooma safe.

We’ve seen first-hand recently how quickly a small fire can escalate.

In the past few weeks, we’ve had a cooking fire locally that was already knocked down when we arrived.
If it hadn’t been dealt with straight away, the house would likely have been fully involved by the time crews got there.

We’ve also seen another example recently where early action made a big difference.

Same lesson both times:

👉 The best time to put a fire out is when it’s small.

These are simple setups at home and in a vehicle — nothing fancy, but ready if needed.

Most fires start with everyday things — cooking, electrics, heaters —
but once they take hold, they move FAST.

💡 A couple of simple things to check:

✔ Fire extinguisher or blanket — and know how to use them
✔ Working smoke alarms
✔ A simple plan if it gets out of control

If you’ve been putting it off — add smoke alarm batteries to your next shopping list.

If a fire does take hold — get out, stay out and call 000.

Take 5 minutes tonight and have a look around your place (and your vehicle).

🌩️ THURSDAY WEATHER – LOW KEY HEADS UP

You may have seen forecasts about severe thunderstorms across parts of Victoria tomorrow.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting possible thunderstorms statewide, mainly in the afternoon and evening, with the higher risk of severe weather expected south of us.

For the Cooma area, there is still a chance of storms developing, but the risk is lower.

At this stage, any impacts locally would most likely be:
• Brief gusty winds
• Localised showers or storms

👉 Conditions can change quickly, so keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology warnings and radar if you’re out and about.

🔥 Fire Danger Period Ending – What It Means for Cooma 🔥

The Fire Danger Period will finish at 1:00am on Monday 30th March.

From then, you can conduct burn-offs without a permit, but that does not mean it is risk-free.

Before burning off, make sure you:
- register your burn-off with Fire Permits Victoria
- check the weather, especially wind conditions
- have water and equipment ready
- have enough people there to monitor and control the fire
- put decent containment lines (eg fire break) around the burn area
- stay with the fire until it is fully extinguished

Do not burn on a Total Fire Ban day, when conditions are windy, hot or unsafe, or if you cannot keep the burn contained.

We get a lot of call-outs around the end of the Fire Danger Period from people burning off and not planning properly. Please take the time to prepare well and burn safely.

Even though the season is finishing, fire can still spread quickly in the right conditions.

If in doubt, don’t light it.

🔥 Burn-off Permits Reopening – District 22 🔥

Farmers and landholders in our area are advised that Schedule 3 Burn-off Permits will reopen from Tuesday 10 March.

Permits will initially be available for a 3-week period, after which the arrangements will be reviewed.

Key points:
• Burn-offs require a valid permit
• Lighting time is from 4:00 pm (1600 hrs)
• The permit portal opens tomorrow morning for applications

If you are planning a burn-off, please make sure you obtain a permit and follow all permit conditions.

🚨 Product recall - Toyota Landcruiser 300 (FJA300R) 🚨

Fire risk: Due to a Transmission Control Module (TCM) programming issue, the transmission may rev faster than intended causing a loss of motive power and transmission fluid to leak. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a vehicle fire whilst driving.
