โ™จ๏ธ Exciting opportunity at Hastings Thermal Springs! ๐ŸŒฟ

The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to reimagine the Hastings Thermal Springs Precinct.

This is a fantastic opportunity for operators to submit creative concepts for a revitalised tourism destination on the doorstep of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

What's on offer?
The 8.9 hectare precinct includes the iconic thermal pool, visitor centre, cafรฉ, walking tracks and historic Chalet โ€” with scope to propose new facilities including accommodation.

What are they looking for?
โœ… Sustainable, innovative concepts compatible with the natural environment
โœ… Proposals that benefit local communities, including Tasmanian Aboriginal people
โœ… Wellness, nature-based and heritage tourism experiences are a natural fit
โœ… Demonstrated capability to operate the site in a commercially viable way

This is part of the Tasmanian Government's commitment to re-imagining Hastings Thermal Pool and supports the 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy for the Far South.

๐ŸŽ‰ See what's coming to Cygnet! ๐Ÿ…ฟ๐Ÿšธ๐Ÿฆ“โ™ฟ

The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Program has reached an important milestone, with concept designs now available for the community to view! ๐Ÿ™Œ

These designs have been shaped by community feedback and focus on making Cygnet safer, calmer and more accessible for everyone โ€” whether you're walking, driving, shopping or visiting. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Here's a snapshot of what's included:

๐Ÿ”น Lymington Road widening โ€“ A 480-metre section between the footbridge and the Cannery will be widened to allow a centreline to be marked, improving safety for all road users

๐Ÿ”น New wombat crossings โ€“ Additional crossings in front of the old post office at Golden Valley Road and at Red Velvet Lounge, complementing the existing Town Hall crossing

๐Ÿ”น Accessible parking bays โ€“ New on-street accessible spaces at intervals along Mary Street for mobility-impaired visitors

๐Ÿ”น Mary Street centreline realignment โ€“ Relocated to better accommodate safe passing of vehicles

๐Ÿ”น Town Hall carpark extension โ€“ Creating over 100 new all-day spaces, additional accessible spaces and provision for increased EV charging

๐Ÿ”น New Mary Street carpark โ€“ A new access road and carpark next to the BP and future ambulance station with accessible EV charging points, conveniently located opposite a bus stop

The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Program is supported by the Tasmanian Government through the Department of State Growth and the overall program is expected to be completed by 2028. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ Big wins from our NRM team! ๐ŸŒฟ

This World Environment Day, we're celebrating the quiet, unglamorous work that makes a real difference on the ground โ€” and our Natural Resource Management (NRM) team have been doing exactly that.

We've just wrapped up our latest karamu (Coprosma robusta) surveys along the Kermandie River near Geeveston โ€” a three-day effort that recorded and treated 148 plants. Four members of our depot crew joined the NRM team on the final day, bringing some great cross-department energy to finish things off strong.

It was a brilliant reminder of the important work our NRM team does day in, day out. ๐Ÿ’ช

Why does karamu matter?

It's a high-priority w**d currently established in just three locations across Tasmania โ€” Fern Tree, the Derwent Valley, and Geeveston. Left unchecked, it can take over riverbanks and wet forests, causing serious environmental damage.

๐Ÿ“… Since our eradication project began in 2020 โ€” supported by the Tasmanian W**ds Action Fund โ€” the progress has been remarkable. Dense hedges of mature trees have been reduced to small, scattered seedlings. This year alone, the team waded over 4km of rivers across multiple survey days.

This is a long-term commitment. Because new plants can regrow from tiny root fragments, monitoring will continue for at least the next decade.

๐Ÿ‘ A huge thank you to volunteer Seth from Bushlinks Landcare for lending a hand!

๐Ÿ‘€ Think you've spotted karamu? Please report it to our NRM Unit โ€” community sightings make a real difference.
