🌱 From code to creek beds: how a UTAS student helped tackle w**ds in the Huon Valley

Huon Valley Council recently hosted Juman Ashfi, a Bachelor of ICT student from the University of Tasmania, for a Sustainability Placement Experience with our Environmental Sustainability team.

Working alongside our W**d Management team, Juman explored ways to streamline reporting and mapping processes - with the goal of freeing up staff time for on-ground w**d control and environmental work.

W**d Management Officer Jackie Sellers, who mentored Juman during the placement, said:

"Juman brought a fresh perspective to how we manage our workload - the reporting tools he helped set up will make a real difference to how much time our field officers can spend in the field, and implementing further safety measures to support those officers."

It's a great example of how partnerships between Council and the University can bring fresh thinking to everyday environmental challenges - and give students real-world experience that makes a genuine difference.

🌱 Seasonal changeover time! 🌱

Spring means it's park care and sports field renewal season across the Huon Valley! This week our team is hard at work on the seasonal changeover at Huonville Oval, transitioning the ground from AFL and soccer to cricket and athletics for summer.

What you might see happening:

🚜 Tractor activity on and around the oval
🌾 Spreading of sand, seed, and fertiliser
🌿 W**d spraying
πŸ“ Line marking and ground renovations

Depending on the weather, this work may take a few weeks to complete.

For your safety (and our workers'), please follow signage and avoid work areas while upgrades are underway.

Thanks for your patience as we keep this much-loved community space in top condition, ready for the season ahead! 🏏

🚨 Vandals caught thanks to sharp-eyed community members 🚨

Council was disappointed to discover that the shelter and informative signage along the Skinners Creek walking track were recently vandalised.

Thanks to community members who reported the incident, Tasmania Police were able to investigate and identify those responsible.

We extend a genuine thank you to those community members. Reporting incidents like this really does make a difference, and it's the reason the offenders were caught.

If you see vandalism or other suspicious activity in our parks and reserves, please report it:
πŸ“ž Police Assistance Line (non-emergency): 131 444
πŸ“ž Crime Stoppers (anonymous): 1800 333 000

πŸ› οΈ Council will now begin cleaning up and repairing the site. It's a timely reminder that vandalism costs the community money, which we'd much rather spend on projects that benefit everyone.

We appreciate the community's support in looking after Skinners Creek, and we'll have it back to its best in no time πŸ’š

🚧 Traffic survey cameras 🚧

As part of Huonville Reimagined, we're installing temporary traffic survey cameras around Huonville from this evening, Monday 7 September 2026.

The cameras will help us understand how traffic moves through Huonville, so we can plan for the future.

What the work includes:
πŸ“Έ Installing survey cameras at sites throughout Huonville from Monday evening (7 September)
πŸš— Collecting data on traffic volumes and movement patterns
πŸ“† Removal: Friday 11 September

What to expect:
βœ… The cameras are not used for enforcement
βœ… Only raw traffic data is kept β€” footage is not retained
βœ… A contact number will be displayed beneath each camera if you have any questions

🍏 Still tossing food scraps in the bin? There's a better way!

Huon Valley households can drop off food scraps for free at the Southbridge (Huonville) Waste Transfer Station as part of Council's food waste trial.

It only takes a minute, and it makes a real difference β€” keeping scraps out of landfill and supporting a cleaner, greener Huon Valley.

βœ… Bring along: fruit and veggie scraps, eggshells, bones, meat, dairy, leftovers and certified compostable bin liners marked AS 4736 or AS 5810.

❌ Please leave out: packaging, plastic or uncertified "green" liners, garden waste, pet waste and anything that isn't food.

Next time you're at Southbridge, bring your food scraps along β€” every little bit helps!

πŸŽ‰ Three community facilities just got safer and more accessible πŸŽ‰

Thanks to funding from the Tasmanian Government's 2024 election commitments, three long-awaited upgrades across the Huon Valley are now complete.

What's changed:
🚣 Mosquito Point, Ranelagh – a new lower deck, steps, handrail and kayak entry rail make the ramp safer to use, especially when river levels drop in summer
β™Ώ Geeveston Town Hall – a new access ramp makes it easier for everyone to get into events like the Geeveston Feast
🏊 Port Huon Sports and Aquatic Centre – the upstairs area now includes a bookable multipurpose studio, a smaller flexible space and a staff office, adding to the pool relining and change room work completed over the past couple of years

These projects were championed by local community groups and delivered in partnership with the Tasmanian Government and The Honourable Jacquie Petrusma MP.
