National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared history and consider how we can each contribute to a more respectful and inclusive future with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At VMCH, reconciliation is part of how we show care and respect every day. It can be as simple as learning about the Traditional Owners of the land we’re on, acknowledging Country, or having open and respectful conversations with those around us.

These small, meaningful actions help build greater understanding, connection and respect across our communities.

If you’re looking to learn more or get involved, visit Reconciliation Australia (https://www.reconciliation.org.au/) or explore events happening in your local area this week.

✨This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the amazing people who give their time to help others.

We asked our VMCH aged care residents what volunteers mean to them — and their answers show just how important volunteers are in our community.

It’s National Volunteer Week — and this year feels extra special, with 2026 recognised by the United Nations as the International Year of the Volunteer.

There’s never been a better time to say thank you to the 440+ volunteers who generously share their time, care and compassion across our community.

Yesterday we came together for the 2026 VMCH Volunteers’ Celebration and Service Recognition Luncheon, a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate those who have supported our community for anywhere from five to an incredible 30 years of service.

We’re so grateful for the difference our volunteers make every day. Their kindness and commitment truly help bring our communities to life.

Later this week, we’ll be sharing more from the day, including photos and heartfelt messages from our aged care residents about what volunteers mean to them.

It is with deep sadness that we reflect on the passing of John McKenna — a truly exceptional CFO, colleague, and friend to so many at VMCH.

John served as VMCH's CFO from 2015-2020. He was far more than a highly respected financial leader. He brought compassion, humanity, and heart into every aspect of his work. He cared deeply for the people around him and for the mission of the organization, always ensuring that decisions were grounded not only in good governance, but in kindness and understanding.

He was generous with his time, supportive of his staff, and deeply committed to helping others succeed. John had a rare ability to bring the human element into the workplace — making people feel valued, heard, and cared for. He looked after his team with genuine compassion and created an environment where people felt supported and encouraged.

At the same time, John’s warmth, humor, and sense of fun brought joy to those fortunate enough to work alongside him. He knew how to lighten a room with a laugh, keep perspective during difficult moments, and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. His ability to balance professionalism with authenticity was one of the many reasons he was so admired.

John was also deeply respected for the way he managed relationships with the Board and across the organization, always with integrity, wisdom, and grace. He earned the trust and admiration of colleagues at every level.

He was a very loved and admired member of the VMCH community, and his passing leaves an enormous void. We are profoundly saddened by the loss of someone who meant so much to so many. John will be remembered not only for his leadership and capability, but for his kindness, humor, compassion, and the lasting impact he had on everyone privileged to know and work with him.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who treasured their time with him.

We’re proud to share that our partnership with Mannix College has been recognised on the international stage at the Asia-Pacific Student Accommodation Association (APSAA) Excellence Awards.

Our intergenerational volunteer program, Mannix Young Hearts, was awarded ‘Best Student Experience Program’, a testament to the meaningful connections it creates between generations.

Since launching in September 2024, Mannix Young Hearts has brought Mannix College students together with residents at VMCH Corpus Christi aged care through shared experiences in music, art, exercise and technology.

Thank you to APSAA for this recognition, and to the incredible students and residents who are at the heart of this partnership. ❤️

April wrap‑up! ✨

Here’s a snapshot of what went on across our aged care residences last month. April brought milestone birthday celebrations, a visit from a very special guest (hint: 🐰), and plenty of time soaking up the unusually warm Autumn weather.

🎉🎂 Happy 102nd Birthday, Mavis! 🎂🎉

Born and raised in Collingwood, Mavis grew up quickly after losing her mother at just 10 years old. By 13, she had left school and was already working in a boot factory, later becoming a skilled machinist making drapes and curtains.

Mavis proudly raised her two children, Barry and Sunny, saying they were “the focus of my life”. She now has 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, who regularly visit her at Shanagolden.

Mavis has loved dancing her whole life, a passion sparked in childhood when her father took her along to his dance lessons — and later joined her for dances in the living room at home.

A lifelong Collingwood Magpies supporter, Mavis has followed the club since birth and witnessed an incredible 16 premiership wins along the way.

Since moving to Shanagolden in June 2024, Mavis has settled in beautifully, forming great friendships and actively taking part in daily life. You’ll often find her helping out with the Busy Bees Club, enjoying a game of bingo, or sharing a morning coffee with fellow residents in the café.

Please join us in wishing Mavis a very happy birthday! 💗
