🏠 Winter Fireplace Safety

With the colder nights settling in across the hills, fireplaces and wood heaters are starting to get a regular workout.

Before settling in for a cosy evening by the fire, take a few minutes to check your chimney or flue.

Over time, soot and creosote can build up inside chimneys and flues, creating a significant fire risk if left unchecked. Blockages such as leaves, debris, or bird nests can also cause problems.

A few simple checks can go a long way:

β€’ Have your chimney or flue cleaned and inspected regularly
β€’ Burn dry, seasoned firewood
β€’ Check for blockages before winter use
β€’ Keep the area around your heater clear of combustible materials
β€’ Test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed

Every winter, structure fires occur as a result of heating appliances and poorly maintained chimneys. A little maintenance now can help keep your home and family safe throughout the colder months.

Stay warm and stay safe this winter.

πŸ”₯ Open Burning Is Now In Effect πŸ”₯

As of today, the Shire of Mundaring has entered the Unrestricted Burning Period.

Many residents have already been carrying out burn-offs throughout the restricted burning season, and we'd like to thank everyone who has been doing so safely.

While permits are no longer required, it's still important to burn responsibly:

β€’ Have water available before lighting up
β€’ Keep an eye on the weather and wind conditions
β€’ Never leave a burn unattended
β€’ Be mindful of your neighbours and smoke impacts
β€’ Make sure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving

Every year our volunteers attend incidents that started as routine burn-offs. Most can be avoided with a bit of planning and supervision.

A few extra minutes keeping an eye on your burn can save a lot of trouble for you, your neighbours, and our volunteers.

For more information on burning periods and current restrictions, visit the Shire of Mundaring website.

Stay safe and enjoy the cooler weather.

NATIONAL SMOKE ALARM ACTION DAY rolls out on 1 June .. BE SMART and TAKE PART πŸ˜ƒ

If you're going to be busy that day, maybe set a reminder alarm and bring it forward to the weekend instead πŸ™‚

1 June is also the first day of winter, which is traditionally the highest risk time for house fires, so the more checking and maintaining we do, the better we can try and protect ourselves πŸ’ͺ🏽

It's recommended that we regularly check and maintain our smoke alarms and this is your friendly reminder on that task 😊

πŸ˜ƒ Here's a helpful schedule for checking and maintaining your smoke alarms:

πŸ’₯ Every DAY or WEEK: keep a lookout on smoke alarms to make sure the battery indicator light flashes on occasionally

πŸ’₯ Every MONTH: press the test button until the alarm sounds; if it doesn't sound then replace battery and retest; if still no sound, replace smoke alarm

πŸ’₯ Every YEAR: change batteries annually, dust the cover, and vacuum the exterior to prevent faults

πŸ’₯ Every 10 YEARS: replace the entire smoke alarm unit, as sensors degrade and become less sensitive over time
