π Winter Fireplace Safety
With the colder nights settling in across the hills, fireplaces and wood heaters are starting to get a regular workout.
Before settling in for a cosy evening by the fire, take a few minutes to check your chimney or flue.
Over time, soot and creosote can build up inside chimneys and flues, creating a significant fire risk if left unchecked. Blockages such as leaves, debris, or bird nests can also cause problems.
A few simple checks can go a long way:
β’ Have your chimney or flue cleaned and inspected regularly
β’ Burn dry, seasoned firewood
β’ Check for blockages before winter use
β’ Keep the area around your heater clear of combustible materials
β’ Test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed
Every winter, structure fires occur as a result of heating appliances and poorly maintained chimneys. A little maintenance now can help keep your home and family safe throughout the colder months.
Stay warm and stay safe this winter.
