A few weeks ago I was incredibly fortunate to visit the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation (NYFL) in Ieramugadu/Roebourne, in the Pilbara, NW Western Australia.

"NYFL is the Traditional Owner organisation dedicated to building a legacy of prosperity and wellbeing for our community. Founded in 1998, we are committed to empowering social, economic and cultural prosperity among the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi people, the Ieramugadu (Roebourne) community, and beyond."

This place is a pumping community hub which includes a cafe and the Ieramugadu Store - basically a small supermarket which is a social enterprise not-for-profit enterprise with proceeds addressing local food insecurity.

They've recently started a community garden directly outside this space full of young fruit trees, veggies and the promise of so much more! Yindjibarndi man Kevin Guiness and Ngarluma woman, Dolly Samson showed me around with NYFL CEO, Sean-Paul Stephens. We talked hard and fast on gardening approaches and ideas for their space. It was a way too short visit and I'm already scheming how I can go back.

"Our community continues to experience extreme social and economic disadvantage – but we are changing that one step at a time. This is self-determination."
