Fifteen years ago, Senior Women from Roebourne had an idea: that making good stories about a place and its people could change how young people there imagined their future. They invited Big hART to join with them to help make their idea a reality.🎨
That idea is reflected in Essence — the legacy of a body of work spanning theatre, music, film, dance and digital art, built by Roebourne's young people alongside professional artists, and performed everywhere from the Ngurin Centre to Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery and the Sydney Opera House.
In August, it came home. Essence transformed Roebourne itself into a living, moving gallery — films on the streets, painting the stories, music and cultural exchanges on Roe Street.
Over the next three weeks we're taking you through it. 🧵

One week to create a story and performance together. It was so fun we can't wait to do it again. Well done Dreamcast Theatre team and Jacob and Adrian.

This is Skate of Mind. 🛹

Back in May, a group of Australian skaters, musicians and artists touched down in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai — trading tricks, sessions and stories with a delegation of young Chinese skateboarders and creatives.

In August, the exchange came home. The Chinese delegation arrived in Darwin for a 12-day journey through the Top End — Jabiru, Katherine, Mataranka, Litchfield — before an immersive finale in Sydney.

Over the next few weeks we're taking you back through the tour, day by day. Skateparks, red dirt, new friendships, and the universal language of four wheels and a board.

First stop: Darwin. 📍

Skate of Mind is a Big hART program, this NT tour was delivered in partnership with Build Up Skateboarding, and supported by the Australian Government and the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.
