It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of one of our dispatchers, Oralee Curtis. She faced a lengthy illness that arose unexpectedly with strength and grace.

Since 2001, Oralee served her community with professionalism and compassion and was a valued member of both the Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and Brandon Police Service families. She will be remembered fondly by her colleagues and by all those whose lives she touched over the years.

Our hearts are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time, please keep them in your thoughts.

Oralee was not one to have her picture taken, but she never changed. We have shared some pictures below.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services is proud to welcome the newest member to the department, Brandon Public Safety Communications Centre (BPCC) dispatcher Sarah Rankin!

Sarah grew up in the small town of Miami but has called Brandon home for the last 16 years. Before joining the communication centre, she worked for many years as a hairstylist.

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys spending time with family and friends, spending time with her little dog, and staying active.

Happy Thursday! Our 911 call takers and dispatchers are highly trained, dedicated professionals who will get you the help you need.

Please remember these tips whenever you call 911:

1. Know your location at all times.
2. Don’t program 911 into any phone.
3. If you call 911 accidentally, stay on the line and let us know.
4. Lock and store your cellphone carefully to prevent accidental 911 calls.
5. Do not text or tweet 911.

This morning we had a very special visitor.

Quinn Strang, from Moncton, New Brunswick, is currently hitchhiking across Canada to raise funds for cancer research and support families affected by childhood cancer.

At just 15 years old, Quinn was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in his femur. Ewing sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects children, adolescents, and young adults. Following treatment, Quinn underwent a complete femur replacement.

Now 20 years old and in remission, Quinn is determined to help ensure others receive the support they need during their own cancer journeys.

Quinn began his trek with his feet in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland, following Terry Fox’s route across the country until reaching Thunder Bay. His goal is to stand in the Pacific Ocean by June 15, 2026.

Along the way, Quinn hopes to raise $100,000. As of this morning, he has already raised $77,773. Half of all donations will support the Terry Fox Foundation, while the other half will go to the IWK Foundation’s Patient Family Support Trust Fund, which helps families manage the financial burdens that often accompany a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

The Brandon Firefighter Paramedics of IAFF Local 803 were proud to make a donation in support of Quinn’s incredible journey.

Tremendous leadership by the City of Calgary, this is something the City of Brandon - Local Government desperately needs.

A fire board would create a much more effective governance model, to ensure our fire department is meeting the needs of our community today, and well into the future!

Mayor Jeff Fawcett said in his state of the city address this year, that Brandon is on track to hit 80,000 residents in 14 years, a 45% increase in population. This would be a crucial step towards making sure we are prepared for this.

Congratulations to the City of Calgary, your city will be safer because of this decision and was so important it passed UNANIMOUSLY
