For the past few weeks, we've been asking some questions about philanthropy.

What does it really mean?
Who gets to call themselves a philanthropist?
And somewhere along the way, did our perception of the word become bigger than its actual meaning?

Today, we often associate philanthropy with extraordinary wealth, major gifts and names on buildings.

But when we went back to the word itself, we found something much simpler.

Philanthropy, at its roots, means "love of humankind." It is about caring for others and choosing to act in ways that make life and our communities better.

On September 8, we're excited to introduce you to Calgary's Newest Philanthropist, and begin a bigger conversation about what philanthropy can look like in our city.

We think you might be surprised by who it is.

Today, we remember the people whose lives have been lost to overdose, and we stand alongside the parents, children, partners, siblings, friends and communities who continue to carry that loss.

Across Canada, 5,630 apparent opioid toxicity deaths were reported in 2025.

Behind every number is a person, and behind every person are people who loved them.

We remember without judgment.

We stand for compassionate, accessible health care and support.

We're about to challenge one of the biggest misconceptions about giving.

For too long, philanthropy has been associated with wealth, celebrity, and million-dollar donations.

Don’t get us wrong, those things can be part of it, but what if there’s way more to it?

What if we've been thinking about it all wrong?

What if becoming a philanthropist has nothing to do with how much you have...
and everything to do with the choice to care?

We were honoured to be featured on an episode of ‘Our Community’ on AMI sharing the work of Accessible Housing and the importance of creating homes and communities where accessibility is considered from the beginning—not added as an afterthought.

AMI’s programming plays such an important role in bringing disability, accessibility, inclusion, and lived experience into everyday conversations.

Content like ‘Our Community’ gives people the opportunity to see what accessibility looks like in real life, hear directly from the people affected by it, and better understand why inclusive design matters.

We’re grateful to AMI for creating space for these conversations and for helping shine a light on the people and organizations working toward a more accessible future.

The word philanthropy comes from the Greek philos (love) and anthropos (humankind). Quite literally, it means “love of humanity.”

Today, philanthropy is simply the act of using your time, money, skills, or influence to make life better for others.

Notice what’s missing from that definition?

There is no minimum dollar amount.
No income requirement.
No expectation that your name appears on a plaque.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve confused wealth with philanthropy.

Calgary has a long history of incredible philanthropy.

People like Arlene Dickinson, W. Brett Wilson, Monique Barrie and the Hunter Family, (just to name a few), are among the many Calgarians who have helped strengthen our community through generosity, leadership and a commitment to making a difference.

But what does it really mean to be a philanthropist?

At its heart, philanthropy is about improving the lives of others. It can be a transformational financial gift, but it can also mean giving your time, sharing your skills, opening doors, advocating for change or supporting a cause you believe in.

And that got us thinking…
Who might Calgary’s newest philanthropist be?

We’ve been taking a much closer look at one word.

Philanthropy.

It’s a word we hear often, but do we really stop to think about what it means?

For many people, the word brings to mind million-dollar donations, wealthy benefactors, or names etched onto buildings.

But is that really what philanthropy is?

At its simplest, philanthropy is about helping others. It’s choosing to make a positive difference in your community, whatever that looks like for you.

It isn’t defined by the size of a donation.
It’s defined by the decision to care.
