During Emergency Preparedness Week 2026, the Castlegar Fire Department and Emergency Support Services (ESS) Team remind residents to be ready for evacuation at a moment’s notice. Know your hazards, plan multiple routes, and identify a safe meeting place. Prepare a grab-and-go kit with water, medications, documents, clothing, and pet supplies for at least 72 hours. Sign up for local alerts, follow official instructions, and check on neighbors who may need assistance. Practice your plan regularly so everyone knows what to do and where to go. Preparedness saves time, reduces stress, and protects lives. Stay informed, stay calm, and be ready to leave immediately when advised.

Being prepared for emergencies is important. Create an ESS profile using the online Evacuee Registration and Assistance tool. Pre-registering will save time ...

Controlled Burn Notice 🔥 from January 21-25, 2026

The Castlegar Fire Department is aware of controlled slash-pile burns taking place in the area. This is a common time of year for contractors and property owners to conduct debris and fuel-management burning, especially with the recent cold and wet conditions.

You may see smoke from controlled burns over the coming days.

These burns are expected and typically monitored by those conducting them.

If you see anything that appears unsafe, or fire or smoke that seems out of the ordinary, please call 9-1-1.

🚧 Notice of Work: FireSmart Project at Millennium Park & Ponds🚧

The Castlegar Fire Department will conduct FireSmart work at Millennium Park & Ponds on September 4 & 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This work is part of a two-year phased wildfire mitigation project specific to Millennium Park & Ponds, conducted in collaboration with Selkirk College students in the Forest Technology Program. The City and Selkirk College partnership began in 2018, offering students valuable hands-on experience while enhancing community safety.

Please respect all signage and barricades around the worksite for your and our crews' safety. Glacier Valley Tree Service will operate heavy machinery onsite, including a chipper and skid steer, and perform essential tree-falling work.

This project reduces wildfire risks and provides invaluable experience for the forestry students from Selkirk College. 🌲
