Lakelands Public Health is offering 100 free radon home test kits to Haliburton County residents as part of the 100 Test Kit Challenge!

Radon is an invisible, odourless, radioactive gas that can build up in homes and long-term exposure to high levels can increase the risk of lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know if radon levels in your home are high.

Register now, attend the online information session on October 28 at 7 pm, then pick up your free test kit at the Dysart or Wilberforce branch between November 3-7.

🎃 Get into the Halloween spirit with a fun, hands-on crafting program! 💡

Join us at the Dysart branch (Haliburton Village) on Saturday, October 10 from 11am-12pm. Registration required (scan the QR code to register today).

Use Cricut Maker technology to design and create a personalized Halloween lantern. From spooky shapes to festive designs, everyone can get creative and make their lantern uniquely their own. Participants will cut and assemble their designs using cardstock and add a small LED light to bring their lantern to life.

At the end of the program, each participant will have a one-of-a-kind Halloween lantern to take home and enjoy throughout the spooky season!

Open to all ages. Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for a thought-provoking screening of The Nest.

Minden Hills branch: Thursday, October 8 from 1-3pm.

This powerful National Film Board of Canada documentary follows writer Julietta Singh as she returns to her childhood home and uncovers 140 years of forgotten stories within its walls.

Through family memories, archival discoveries, and the voices of Indigenous, Deaf, Japanese and South Asian communities, the film explores hidden histories, generations of remarkable women, and the importance of remembering the stories that have been left out of the historical record.

Presented in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada and the Minden Hills Cultural Centre.

All are welcome. No registration required.

SUBJECT: Minden Library Temporary Closure - Update

Important update to clarify the temporary closure of the County of Haliburton Public Library – Minden Branch during the upcoming reconstruction of the retaining wall and ramp. The temporary closure is scheduled to start October 13, 2026 and the facility will remain closed for 4 to 6 weeks during the construction.

The decision to temporarily close the Haliburton County Public Library - Minden Branch - relates to the safety and usability of the facility during the reconstruction project. To keep patrons and staff in a safe / accessible environment a temporary closure is being implemented.

Please note the following important dates:

October 8, 2026: The parking lot immediately adjacent to the library will be closed. Parking will continue to be available at the back parking lot.

October 13, 2026: Reconstruction will begin and the Minden Hills Branch will be CLOSED to the public for the duration of the construction, 4 to 6 weeks.

Water Sample Drop-off will be impacted as the Minden Library will be temporarily closed starting on October 13, 2026. Please contact Lakelands Public Health for information on water sample drop off at 1-844-575-4567 or www.lakelandsph.ca.

The Minden Hills Cultural Centre and Agnes Jamieson Gallery will continue to operate with normal business hours. Parking will be available at the back parking lot only.

Note that the S.G. Nesbitt Memorial Arena has complimentary Wi-Fi, charging stations and lounge areas, and is open 7 days a week 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m., except holidays.

Drop off clean, gently-used Halloween costumes and accessories at any HCPL branch.

What we accept:
Gently-used costumes (all sizes), hats, masks, wigs, costume jewelry, and props. Items must be clean and in good condition.

Then, come by in October 17 to the Dysart Branch and October 24 in Stanhope and Wilberforce branches to browse for a “new-to-you” costume—no donation required to participate!

Costumes will be organized by size and type, with options for kids, teens, and adults.

Help your community reduce waste, save money, and share in the Halloween spirit! Feel free to bring your donations along to the swap. Any remaining costumes will be donated to continue spreading the Halloween joy!
