Great time at World Cup Day at Hess Elementary School. The play space I created with the help of the school board is being put to excellent use. This is the kind of thing the City can do with SJAM and I’m really grateful for Council’s support to make this a reality.

Many residents have asked what Council is doing to stop the data centres. Here's the motion Councillor Nann and I have been working on with staff in the Planning Division. This is unprecedented territory for cities and we need a clear path forward. This gets us there, together.

This motion, which is coming to the Planning Committee on June 16, includes the approval of an interim control bylaw to put a moratorium on any data centres until the City has policies in place to address their impacts.

A PDF of the motion is available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uJyKPgcDineyF1w3jsg2C77hr0kbwqZO/view?usp=sharing.

Important read in today's Spec from Kojo Damptey. There's a disproportionate amount of police force impacting Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities in our city, and across the Province. The evidence is clear and I deeply appreciate Kojo leading with the facts. It matters.

Thanks to Mark Chamberlain for his article in today's Spec. He raises important points about the Provincial government's priorities and why their lack of serious investment in housing continues to impact our local communities. It's an important reminder of who holds the power and the money.

I haven't been at a protest at City Hall that large and well organized in a long time. The mere suggestion of an AI data centre coming to our city had Hamiltonians up in arms. Love it. I'm so proud of my city and the many downtowners who showed up yesterday. I'm glad the Committee listened.

And now that the Committee has weighed in, I can offer up my two cents - I will not support an AI data centre coming to Hamilton. As a lifelong environmentalist, I don't see an ethical upside. And AI is a scourge and the generative slop it spews is making our society worse, not better.

The Federal government's attempt to force AI down our throats under the guise of "good policy" isn't going to fly. They have more important things to do and they should start doing them. I don't hear an outcry from Canadians for more AI data centres. AI is about profits over people.

First Nations across this country need clean drinking water. Markets need to be regulated to bring back affordability for those who are suffering most. Cities need support to address overlapping and mounting crises. This country needs to get its priorities straight. AI data centres aren't it.

And this is the last thing Hamilton needs. We're still suffering from the fallout of the last industrial revolution - we can't swim in our water, too much of the land left to develop downtown is contaminated, and senior governments continue to let big industry and rail pollute our air. Get lost.
