In recognition of 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 on October 26, today we're celebrating 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘀, Learning Commons Technician, and the Learning Commons at High Prairie Elementary!

Shelley shares that the Learning Commons at HPE is a welcoming space designed to foster a love of reading. We support programs like Accelerated Reader to help students find books that match their level perfectly. Our students have access to a wide selection of fiction and nonfiction, plus digital eBooks available through Sora.

One of Shelley's favourite parts of her role is helping students discover new books and authors, while also supporting teachers with resources that complement classroom learning.

For some laughs, Shelley recommends anything by Jory John – his picture books are hilarious & fun to read. For fantasy lovers, David A. Robertson's Misewa Saga is a big hit with HPE readers. She also recommends Katherine Applegate, whose heartwarming stories leave a lasting impression.

🎃🖍️ Halloween Colouring Contest at HPE! 👻🎨

Calling all our creative Thunderbirds! 💙💛

Get ready to unleash your imagination and show off your artistic talents in our Halloween Colouring Contest, proudly hosted by HOSTS and High Prairie Elementary School!

At HPE, we celebrate the joy of teaching and learning, and we believe that creativity, imagination, and self-expression are important parts of every child's learning journey.

🖍️ How to Participate:

Teachers will send colouring pages home next week.

Students can bring their Halloween masterpieces to life using crayons, markers, or pencil crayons.

Return completed artwork to your teacher with your name and class clearly written.

📅 Submission Deadline: Wednesday, October 28, 2026

🏆 Two winners will be selected:
🎨 One from Kindergarten–Grade 3
🎨 One from Grades 4–6

🎁 Prizes: Each winner will receive a child showpass to Park Theatre and a special Halloween treat!

🎉 Winners will be announced during our October 30 school assembly!

We encourage all our students to participate, be creative, try their best, and take pride in their work. Remember, every masterpiece begins with imagination and the courage to try something new!

Our Grade 4 students had the opportunity to take part in traditional tipi teachings with Ann and Alan Koski, members of Sucker Creek First Nation.

Ann and Alan guided students through the process of setting up a tipi before sharing teachings about its cultural and spiritual significance.

More than a shelter, the tipi (mîkiwâhp in nêhiyawêwin) represents home, family, balance, and connection. Its structure carries teachings about the stages of life and the values that guide us, including respect, humility, love, kinship, and thankfulness.
