Community Catch-up Sessions: Chat and Connect with Council Members

This Autumn, Region of Queens Municipality’s Council is coming to a community near you as part of their series of Community Catch-Up Sessions. At each of the seven meetings, Mayor Christian and members of Council will provide community members with an update on Municipal projects over the past year, what’s on the schedule to take place, and what’s currently underway. Council wants to hear from you – help to identify priorities in your community!

Seven meetings are scheduled throughout Queens County – come to one near you (there is one planned in each electoral district), or attend one that is convenient for your schedule. All sessions are held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

The dates of the sessions are as follows:

⭐ Tuesday, October 20 — Mersey Point Community Hall
⭐ Monday, October 26 — North Queens Fire Hall
⭐ Monday, November 9 — Seaside Centre
⭐ Monday, November 16 — Greenfield Fire Hall
⭐ Monday, November 23 — Hunts Point Community Hall
⭐ Thursday, November 26 — Queens Place Emera Centre
** please note, the date of this meeting has changed to November 26 due to scheduling conflicts on the original date of November 19

This is an exciting training opportunity for staff who interact with the public – the Nova Scotia Best Service Excellence Customer Service Workshop is being offered at Queens Place Emera Centre on Saturday, October 24 from 9 am – 3:30 pm, and I have been asked to share the details with you, in case any of your staff may benefit from the training.

Nova Scotia Best Service Excellence workshop is one in a series of training opportunities from Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council, however, the training does not only target those in the tourism industry – it focuses on provision of good service to all customers. Nova Scotia Best is based on a positive attitude and approach to working with the public, and that each of us can and must make a difference in the customer’s experience.

Cost for TIANS members is $ 85 a person, $ 125 for non members.

Looking for a local event acknowledging National Day for Truth and Reconciliation? Join in the Mawio’mi taking place on the grounds at the Hank Snow Home Town Museum in Liverpool, starting at 11 am on September 30.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ... a day designated as a national time of reflection, learning and community involvement. On the South Shore, people will gather at the Truth and Reconciliation Day Mawio'mi happening at the Hank Snow Museum Grounds, 148 Bristol Ave, Liverpool, Wednesday September 30 starting at 11 am. Stories, music, dancers, and and more provide everyone with an opportunity to deepen understanding of the intergenerational effects of residential schools and the ongoing journey toward truth, healing, and reconciliation.

All are welcome - please bring your own chair.

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

This federal statutory holiday was created through legislative amendments made by Parliament. Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools.
