Germany and Canada continue to build a strong future together! 🇩🇪🇨🇦

Canadian Gypsum Company (CGC Inc.), part of the German family-owned company Knauf Deutschland, is investing approximately CAD 210 million in its new Wheatland facility near Calgary - a state-of-the-art facility and one of the largest industrial investments in the region in recent years!

Once operational, the plant will significantly increase the supply of Sheetrock® wallboard across Western Canada while supporting local jobs, economic growth, innovation and sustainability in the construction sector 📈🌱

Germany and Canada share a strong economic partnership, with German companies contributing to investment, employment, and sustainable growth across the country. We are pleased to see projects like Wheatland further strengthen these ties 🤝

What can 75 years of diplomatic relations tell us about the future?

Over two days, scholars, diplomats, policymakers, military historians, researchers, and practitioners gathered at the University of Ottawa to reflect on 75 years of Germany-Canada diplomatic relations and to explore the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The symposium traced the relationship from the postwar period through German reunification, military cooperation, trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections. Discussions highlighted the many individuals and institutions that have helped shape the partnership over the past seven decades.

The first day examined the historical foundations of the relationship. Participants explored the evolution of diplomatic ties, Canada’s role during German reunification, the legacy of the Canadian Forces in Germany, contemporary approaches to preventing radicalization and strengthening democratic resilience, and the important role universities continue to play in connecting both countries through research, mobility, and academic exchange.

The second day turned toward the future. Conversations focused on the changing transatlantic landscape, the importance of trusted partnerships, security and defence cooperation, democratic institutions, trade and economic relations, energy security, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Throughout the symposium, participants returned to a common observation: Canada and Germany are navigating many of the same challenges and opportunities at a pivotal moment. The discussions underscored the value of a relationship built on decades of trust, exchange, and cooperation, while pointing to new areas for collaboration in an evolving international landscape.

Thank you to the ’s Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), / .usa DAAD Canada, .affairs.canada, and all speakers, organizers, and participants who contributed to this thoughtful and timely conversation.
