A 28-year-old man has been arrested and 17 charges approved following extensive investigation by SPS Prolific Offender Unit into a series of “smash and grab” robberies at various Surrey electronics retailers between June and October 2026.

In September 2026, SPS Prolific Offender Unit launched an investigation into a series of “smash and grab” robberies where electronics retailers and their staff were the targets of violent acts of theft in which it is alleged that display cabinets were damaged, employees were assaulted, and thousands of dollars in goods were stolen. The culmination of this work resulted in the BC Prosecution Services approving 17 charges against Austin Thomas Romeo Hogan. Hogan was arrested by SPS Frontline officers on October 5, 2026, and at the time of his arrest a loaded fi***rm was allegedly found in his possession. Firearms-related charges have also been sworn.

The Criminal Code charges related to the alleged robberies include:
• 7 Counts of robbery;
• 4 Counts of theft over $5000;
• 1 Count of theft under $5000;
• 2 Counts of assault with a weapon; and
• 3 Counts of mischief.

The Criminal Code charges related to the alleged possession of the fi***rm at the time of Hogan’s arrest on October 5, include:
• 1 count of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted fi***rm without a licence;
• 1 count of possession of a fi***rm knowing its possession is unauthorized;
• 1 count of unauthorized possession of a fi***rm;
• 1 count of carrying a concealed weapon;
• 1 count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and
• 1 count of possession of a fi***rm while prohibited.

The estimated cost in stolen goods and damaged property to the Surrey retailers is approximately $100,000.

Austin Hogan is currently remanded in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
The investigation by the Prolific Offender Unit is continuing. Anyone with information about Austin Hogan and these incidents is asked to contact SPS’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-100695 (SP).

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is asking for the public to send them any dashcam footage they may have of the October 16, 2026, multi-vehicle collision on Highway 99.

At approximately 4:30 pm on October 16, 2026, a semi-truck and trailer was travelling northbound in the 12200-block Highway 99 when it struck three sedans also travelling northbound. The semi-truck left the northbound lanes, jack-knifed, and struck the median separating northbound from southbound traffic. The semi-truck then went into southbound traffic, striking a southbound transit bus carrying approximately 50-60 passengers and another sedan.

SPS officers from across Surrey responded as did multiple Surrey Fire Services firefighters. Numerous BCEHS resources responded, including one air ambulance. Due to the size of the collision scene and resulting traffic congestion, Delta Police Department officers, City of Surrey, Mainroad traffic, and Ministry of Transportation and Transit staff also assisted for several hours.

BCEHS paramedics provided emergency medical care to a total of 13 people. Two people were transported to hospital in serious but stable condition, including one by air ambulance who has since been discharged from hospital. Eleven other people were transported by BCEHS to hospital in stable condition with less serious injuries.

SPS’s Collision Investigation Unit attended the collision and is leading the investigation. At this early stage the cause of the collision remains under investigation. SPS is aware that several motorists and/or passengers in vehicles have shared dashcam footage with local media or posted the footage onto social media and are asking everyone who may have dashcam footage to please share it with Surrey Police Service so it can become part of the investigation.

Anyone who has dashcam footage or witnessed the collision and has not yet shared the footage or spoken with SPS officers is asked to please contact SPS’s non-emergency number at 604-599-0502 and quote file 26-111726 (SP).
