The other day a former resident dropped by our office with her young daughter and sat beside this flower. She spoke of her struggles as a refugee and as a survivor. She cried when she talked about feeling alone and wishing she had a mother and sisters to help her. “When I thought I had no one to turn to for help, I remembered Matthew House so I thought I would came home.” I listened and I prayed with her - that God would restore her hope, remind her of her strength, and provide her family with everything they need. What a beautiful thing to be able to remind people there is hope.

I feel so honoured to be part of a place people turn to when they want to remember what home feels like; what love feels like.

Good things are happening at Matthew House to temporarily house refugees, and to foster welcome and community.

Matthew House has developed a unique simulated hearing program to help refugees prepare for their hearing with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. Our mock hearing program gives residents the opportunity to practice answering questions, understand the hearing process, and build confidence before one of the most important days of their journey.

We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers and professionals who generously share their time and expertise, and to the residents who show up with courage, determination, and resilience.

Together, these practice sessions help turn uncertainty into confidence.

We recently had a team of volunteers from Elevation Church come to one of our transitional homes to help us declutter our basement. They went above and beyond by leaving snacks for our residents. One volunteer noticed the unfinished picnic table, and even volunteered to come back and do the sanding and painting of the bench and the front porch. Don’t you love it when the Church shows up and goes above and beyond? Thank you for standing with refugees, Elevation Church, and thank you for supporting Matthew House! Love indeed..

It was Matthew House’s privilege and honour to host the July meeting for the Ontario Coalition of Service Providers for Refugee Claimants. Meaningful work is happening across Ontario to support and advocate for refugee claimants, and Matthew House is thrilled to be part of this coalition. As we sat in our beautiful garden space, we shared the joys and challenges of serving refugee claimants. Refugees are so often made to feel unwelcome in our country and in our world. It felt good to be surrounded by people who adamantly believe in love, welcome and inclusion. Hope persists!

This week Matthew House celebrates our 28 year anniversary!

Our founder, Anne Woolger, had a vision of creating a faith-based reception home to offer genuine welcome to refugees. In 1998, the vision was realized. 28 years later, Matthew House continues to offer welcome, shelter, transitional housing, support and community to people fleeing persecution from around the globe.

When you work for a small not-for-profit that primarily relies on the donations and good will of others, it can sometimes feel a little scary. Tuesday we needed a speaker and microphone for an event, and borrowed one from First Baptist Church. They joked that we should really be buying our own and (I didn't say it but) the truth is we can't afford one right now. Yesterday they came to pick it up and gifted us with a brand new one. “We thought of just giving you ours but then thought it would be better to buy you a brand new one that has wireless mics.” That is true giving. Their small visit to our office brought joy, laughter, and prayers of blessing.When receiving this gift I (Rochelle, the new E.D.) cried. I cried because they didn’t stop their generosity at lending, or at giving something away so they could get something better. They gave their best. First Baptist Church was founded by slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad 200 years ago and they are still doing amazing justice work. There are a lot of good people in the world and this gift was a reminder that we are not alone. Love carries us. May we live with open, generous hearts.

One of the highlights this summer at Matthew House has been welcoming two newborn babies into our community.

Imagine arriving in a new country after fleeing danger, navigating an uncertain refugee claim, and then bringing a child into the world – far from family and familiar support.

Because of Matthew House, these families came home from the hospital to a safe place, caring staff and volunteers, and a community ready to walk alongside them.

But this summer has also brought unexpected costs. Our homes need essential repairs, extreme heat has required new and repaired air conditioners, and families continue to need groceries, household essentials, and medical supplies.

It was inspiring to be at the Refugee Soccer Cup on Saturday, and we are proud of our Matthew House team! In many ways, it would be easier to have a team where everyone speaks the same language and has the same understanding of the game. But easiest is often not best. Seeing refugees from around the world uniting as a team, smiling and encouraging one another, sparked hope. Hope for what our world could be like if we embraced one another’s differences, encouraged one another’s strengths, and played as a team.
