Come and pray with us!

The Matthew House Team would love to invite you to join us for a prayer gathering on October 20 at 6:00 p.m. at our Laneway Suite Office at 981 Dundas St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1W4.

Our heart for this time is to gather with Matthew House friends and prayer supporters who have expressed a desire to lift us in prayer. This intimate gathering will include a brief devotional, light refreshments, prayers of thanksgiving and praise, and prayers of intercession for refugees.

Thanks to the generosity of a few churches, each of our 7 houses got to celebrate with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this past weekend. One resident commented, “On this Thanksgiving Day, I am grateful to be in Canada and to be surrounded by people who show genuine love and support to newcomers like us.” Another said, “I feel loved, happy, and safe around these people. For me, this house is more than just accommodation; it is a place where I have found belonging, comfort, and a family away from home.” Amen. That is the vision of Matthew House! 🧡

It was a very meaningful day of prayer in Fort Erie at the Peace bridge border. It was also wonderful to meet John Mtshede, Executive Director of Matthew House Fort Erie, and Reverend Adrien, associate pastor at First Baptist and Matthew House alumni. I was moved to receive an Ethiopian scarf and a beseeching request for prayers for peace in Ethiopia. May we continue to pray for peace in our world.

Transitioning into a new home is a major milestone for refugee claimants rebuilding their lives in Canada. As our residents graduate from Matthew House, we provide them with Move-Out Packages filled with essential household items to ensure a warm and dignified fresh start.

You can help welcome our new neighbours by donating gently used or new essential items or volunteering as a driver to support move-out days.

At Matthew House, our work is centered on helping refugees find a safe home after fleeing discrimination and displacement. So of course we have empathy and compassion for the discrimination and displacement Indigenous people have faced for so long in Canada.

As we focus our work on offering a sincere welcome to this land for refugees, we also offer a sincere thank you to Indigenous people who have wisely cared for this land for so many generations. May we learn with humility.

As our work with refugees is attempting to offer a place of refuge where people can heal from trauma, our hearts are joined with Indigenous people who are also healing from trauma.

And as our work celebrates the incredible resilience of refugees, we also celebrate the incredible resilience of Indigenous people. Indeed, Indigenous people and refugees share a survivor spirit and inter-generational strength.

Today, as a small step towards reconciliation, we wore orange shirts and our staff and our residents took time to learn about residential schools. We reflected on right relationships, and we took time to appreciate nature’s beauty. May it continue. May there be more truth and may there be more reconciliation. 🧡

This morning just after 6am I was out for a run and waiting for a light to change. A man approached me with a cigarette dangling from his lips. He extended a $5 bill to me and I politely shook my head. Then he insisted. “Take it. It’s seriously impressive that you are running at this hour.” So I did. Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s seriously impressive that we get out of bed, leave our homes and face all the uncertainties of the day. At Matthew House we support asylum seekers who are waiting on refugee claims to be approved, waiting on work permits to be granted, waiting on reunification with family, waiting on credentials to be recognized. How seriously impressive is their resilience to keep waking up and facing each day with courage? That courage is as amazing as a sunrise.
