Our Technical Rope Rescue Team was out training today, practicing the specialized skills required to perform rescues in steep, remote, and hard-to-access locations.

These scenarios require precision, teamwork, and a commitment to ongoing training. The hours invested today help ensure we are prepared for tomorrow's emergencies.

🚒 Strengthening emergency response through collaboration.

The City of Vernon and the District of Coldstream have launched a two-year Automatic Aid Pilot Project between Vernon Fire Rescue Services and the Coldstream Fire Department.

The project will allow additional personnel and equipment to begin responding sooner, helping firefighters address emergencies more effectively during critical early stages.

Residents will continue to receive fire protection from their local fire department, with no changes to 9-1-1 services or fire station locations.

🚒 Stronger Together

The past couple of weeks have been exceptionally demanding for fire services across British Columbia, and Vernon Fire Rescue Services has been there to help.

VFRS crews and resources have been deployed to support multiple wildfire operations across B.C., including the Bradley Creek wildfire, Brunswick Complex Fire and wildfire response in the Summerland area, while continuing to respond to emergencies here at home.

During periods of high demand, regional partnerships become essential. When Vernon’s resources were stretched by multiple simultaneous incidents, BX-Swan Lake Fire Department, Kelowna Fire Department and Kamloops Fire Rescue stepped in to help maintain fire protection for our community.

To our VFRS members who continue to answer the call, and to our regional partners who stand beside us: thank you for your dedication, professionalism and commitment to protecting our communities.

Given the scope and scale of wildfires currently burning in B.C., and to further protect public safety, recreational off-road vehicle use will be prohibited on Crown land in the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres, as well as parts of the Cariboo and Coastal Fire Centres. This prohibition is effective immediately, as of 12 p.m. (noon) on August 10, 2026.

A big thank you to our emergency response partners who supported Vernon Fire Rescue Services during this evening’s structure fire on Sunset Boulevard.

BC Wildfire Service supported crews at the fire due to its proximity to the wildland interface, providing ground crews and aerial resources to help monitor the surrounding area and ensure resources were available if needed.

Meanwhile, firefighters from the Kelowna and Kamloops fire departments provided mutual aid by staffing Vernon fire halls and maintaining emergency response coverage across the city while VFRS crews from all three stations focused on the fire.

Their crews responded to other calls for service in Vernon throughout the evening, helping ensure our community remained protected.

Responses like this demonstrate the importance of strong partnerships between emergency services, particularly during a busy wildfire season when resources are needed across the region.

UPDATE: August 9 - 9 a.m.
The structure fire on Sunset Boulevard continues to be actioned by crews.

Fire personnel attended the site through late hours of August 8 to monitor flare ups. Smoke can be seen coming from the area. Crews remain on scene this morning.

UPDATE August 8 - 9 p.m.
Structure fire on Sunset Boulevard knocked down.

Vernon Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of Sunset Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. today.

Crews from all three Vernon fire stations responded and have successfully knocked down the fire. BC Wildfire Service also supported the response due to the property’s proximity to a wildland interface area.

Crews will remain on scene into the evening to monitor the property and address any remaining hotspots. Residents may continue to see smoke in the area for some time.
