Check your piles in early spring to make sure they are completely extinguished. Winter burns that are not properly extinguished can smoulder underground for months and reignite as a wildfire in the spring.

๐Ÿ”ฅSpring Fire Warning๐Ÿ”ฅ
Revisiting and checking winter brush piles in Alberta during early spring is critical to prevent them from smoldering underground and reigniting as wildfires. Alberta Wildfire urges residents to check these sites frequently as the weather dries out.

Key Spring Check Guidelines:
๐Ÿ”ฅSpread and Soak: Spread out the remaining ashes and debris, soak the area with water, and stir the ashes to expose hidden hot spots.
๐Ÿ”ฅFeel for Heat: Use a metal rod to probe the pile; if it feels warm to the touch, it is still active.
๐Ÿ”ฅCheck Multiple Times: Revisit the burn site multiple times in the coming weeks to ensure it has not reignited.
๐Ÿš’Report Smoldering: If you see active burning , contact your local forestry office or local fire department.
