South Africa and Leipzig at the Mädler Art Forum: 2/9/26 – 16/1/27:

On Wednesday, the MÄDLER ART FORUM opened “South Africa and Leipzig – Encounters in a Space for Experimentation”, an exhibition that marks the culmination of five years of creative exchange between South African and Leipzig-based artists: Katherine Bull, Sebastian Burger, Bongile Gorata Lecoge-Zulu, Roxy Kaczmarek, Thalente Khomo, Hemali Khoosal, Nolwazi Mbali Mahlangu, Bjørn Mehlhus, Nono Motlhoki, Maria Ondrej, Vlado Ondrej, Natalie Paneng, Ramona Schacht, Maria Schumacher, Jana Schulz, Oupa Sibeko, Tzung-Hui Lauren Lee, Raul Walch, Angelika Waniek, Xhanti Zwelendaba.

In her opening speech, Fransie Cooper, Political Counsellor at the South African Embassy in Berlin, said that „at a time when societies around the world face uncertainty, inequality, and growing division, these works remind us of a simple but powerful truth: Our shared humanity is greater than the challenges that separate us.
The embassy is deeply inspired by the many people in Germany who dedicate their time, energy, and resources to strengthening relations with South Africa and extents its heartfelt thanks and appreciation Head of Division cross-regional issues Africa, African Union, Southern Africa, Great Lakes Region, Federal Foreign Office, MenaLiebold, Director Mädler Art Forum, Anna-Louise Rolland, Curator South Africa and Leipzig, and to all the artists. South Africa’s trade and investment agenda is gaining momentum in Europe as dtic Deputy Minister John Steenhuisen is undertaking a working visit to Czechia, Poland and Germany from 31 August to 10 September 2026.

In Germany, his programme includes engagements with senior economic officials, major investors such as BMW and Siemens, industrial site visits, and discussions with business leaders in Munich and Frankfurt. He will also visit the South African National Pavilion at Automechanika, highlighting local companies and their products to an international audience.

Germany remains a key economic partner for South Africa and the country’s largest trading partner within the European Union. Bilateral trade grew by around 14%, from US$14.3 billion in 2024 to US$16.5 billion in 2025. The visit is therefore focused on deepening economic cooperation, attracting investment, expanding South African exports and advancing industrial development through initiatives such as the Global Eco Industrial Parks Partnership and Partnering in Business with Germany.

Lights, camera, action! The official call for entries for the 2027 edition of Filmfest Dresden, the International Short Film Festival, is live. If you have been working on a short film, animation, or hybrid project, now is your chance to share your creative vision with a global audience and compete for some incredible awards in one of Europe’s premier short film hubs.

Today, Mr Andries Oosthuizen, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the South African Embassy in Berlin, met with Ms Magdalena Cruz, Chargé d' Affaires, a.i, at the Embassy of Spain, for a courtesy call that allowed for a memorable exchange, reflecting on shared journeys, discussing present priorities, and looking ahead to deeper cooperation and enduring collaboration.

As part of the inaugural Crossing Currents | Hamburg Art Week, taking place across Hamburg from 3–6 September 2026, PULSE introduces a new platform for exchange between performance and visual art. Curated by South African choreographer and Hamburg Art Week Artistic Director Jessica Nupen, the performance programme Elsewhere, Here brings together movement, sound, spoken word and visual practice in exhibitions, galleries and independent art spaces across the city. The programme reflects Nupen’s interdisciplinary approach to performance and marks the beginning of a wider artistic framework intended to develop further in 2027.

Among the participating international artists is South African theatre-maker and performer Zandile Darko, who presents TALKING DANCES with Analu Fretta and musician John Eckhardt. The work takes place on Saturday, 5 September 2026 at 16:00 at MASSOUMI Contemporary Art Gallery. Rather than following a predetermined choreography, TALKING DANCES unfolds through improvised movement, writing, spoken word, music and interaction with the audience. Each performance responds to the exhibition and the people in the space, making every encounter distinct and unrepeatable.

South African soul food meets books and creative writing at One More Chapter in Berlin-Friedrichshain. On Sunday, 6 September, their popular Book Brunch in 3 Acts returns as on every first Sunday a month and brings foodies and book lovers together for a delicious literary event.

The brunch begins with a generous Prologue Buffet, followed by your choice of one of three freshly prepared “chapters”: Uncle Waffles with buttermilk waffles, crispy chicken, hibiscus tomato chutney, spinach and cheese sauce; the vegan Cape Malay Chapati Time with homemade chapati, bobotie-style mince, scrambled tofu, baby spinach and hibiscus tomato chutney; or Shakaskouka with a poached egg on chakalaka and steamed bread (ujeqe). And, naturally, no good book would be complete without an epilogue — a selection of homemade desserts to finish things off. All the lekker dishes are provided by South African chef Sibusiso Mntambo.

And there’s something new! By popular demand, the brunch will be followed by “buch.stücke – A Stage for Fragments”, an open stage for young and emerging writers. From 2 PM onwards, texts, sounds, ideas, sketches and works in progress can take centre stage — whether polished or still wonderfully raw. No pressure, no competition, just a welcoming space where fragments are allowed to shine.

From October, German airlines led by Lufthansa are expected to operate a combined 37 weekly flights between South Africa and Germany. Lufthansa currently serves both Johannesburg and Cape Town from its German hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, with daily services on key routes. These expanded schedules are aimed at strengthening tourism, business travel, and trade links between the two countries.

The increase reflects strong demand for travel between Southern Africa and Europe. Lufthansa has continued to invest in its South African network, including year-round services to Johannesburg and Cape Town, providing passengers with onward connections to destinations across Germany and Europe through its Frankfurt and Munich hubs.
