In 2025, the right to protest got harder in dozens of countries.

Across continents, civic space is being squeezed, not always through sudden bans, but through a slow, legalistic erosion.

According to CIVICUS Monitor data, the playbook used to dismantle public demonstration is remarkably consistent across different regions and regimes.

Here is the pattern, and the 5 warning signs to watch for in your own country.

💾 Save this post, and 🔁 share it with anyone who says “that doesn’t happen here.”

⚖️ Stand up for civic space. Hold power accountable.

Fair courts, in real life, not theory. Real 2025 cases on what happens when nobody’s above the law, and what happens when someone is. Send this to whoever says “this doesn’t affect me.”

Free trade or fair trade? For four days in Guatemala, we’ will discuss if this is a matter of Or / And.

Trade policy is often framed as a choice: open markets on one side, protecting producers on the other. But what if the real challenge is building a system that is both open and fair?

That’s the question behind Free & Fair Trade: From Ideas to Action.

Over four days, young liberals from across the Americas will explore the geopolitics of trade, unpack practical policy tools from tariffs and market access to standards, certification and producer fairness and see fair trade in practice during a field visit.

Then comes the challenge: the Policy Shark Tank 🦈

Working in teams, participants will develop a concrete trade policy proposal for the Americas and pitch it to a panel of Sharks. 7 minutes to make the case. 5 minutes to defend it. Liberal principles, fairness, feasibility, evidence and delivery — everything is on the table.

Understand → Discuss → Apply → Propose.

Because the goal isn’t just to talk about trade policy. It’s to build it, test it and defend it.

Swipe through to discover the programme, meet the panellists and see what’s coming up in the Policy Shark Tank.

Today is World Humanitarian Day. It honors the people who walk into the worst moments to help strangers, and the ones who never made it home. Our defenders take risks too, smaller, different, same instinct: showing up anyway.

Budapest, 27–29 November. Our 59th General Assembly. 🇭🇺

The theme is Democracy Wins, and we picked the city with that in mind.

Budapest gives us a place to start a wider conversation about democratic change, what it takes to build momentum, bring people together, win elections, and keep democracy moving forward.

So we’re going there to ask: how?

What actually works when you’re trying to win: organising, unexpected coalitions, campaigning, and pushing back against disinformation? And what lessons can be shared across different regional contexts?

What happens after you win? An election result doesn’t automatically rebuild institutions or strengthen democratic freedoms. The work after victory matters just as much.

And, importantly, what role can young people play? From campaigning and organising to political leadership, young people are often an important part of moments of democratic change. How can that participation turn into long-term political engagement?

During the GA, delegates will take part in our four Standing Committees, debating and voting on resolutions that shape IFLRY’s political direction for the year ahead, as well as engaging with the city’s political life.

Come join us.
