In late May, first responders from the Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles County, California, fire and rescue departments met for a grueling, 96-hour exercise, simulating a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

Little did the teams know during that May exercise how pertinent it would be. Barely a month later, they got the call from the State Department. Two earthquakes — a 7.2 magnitude quake near the town of Yumare, Venezuela, and another, 7.5 magnitude, seconds later — hit on June 24 and left thousands dead or trapped under collapsed buildings.

Speed is essential for the first responders to a disaster. These elite search-and-rescue teams train carefully so they can react quickly.

The USCG Vincent Danz made a port call to Pohnpei last week, reinforcing the strong and enduring partnership between the United States and the FSM. Of special historical note, the vessel is named after Coast Guard Reservist Vincent Danz who, who was a New York City Police Officer killed during the emergency response to the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Specialist 2nd Class at the time of his death.

During the visit, the crew welcomed members of the local Pohnpei community aboard for a tour of the vessel, offering a firsthand look at the ship's operations and fostering meaningful people-to-people connections. A special thank you to the crew for their hospitality and to everyone who joined the tour.

Pohnpei Acting Governor Meets With U.S. Navy Seabee Leadership

KOLONIA, Pohnpei (July 28, 2026) — Acting Governor Herolyn S. Movick hosted representatives from the U.S. Navy Seabees and the U.S. Navy Liaison Officer from Guam for a courtesy visit at the Governor's Office today. The meeting focused on reaffirming the bilateral partnership and reviewing humanitarian infrastructure initiatives within the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
The visiting delegation included Lieutenant (LT) Sean Worth, U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (Seabee) Officer-in-Charge and Liaison Officer (Outgoing), and Lieutenant (Junior Grade) (LTJG) Charles “Chuck” Ledbetter, U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (Seabee) Liaison Officer (Incoming).

The Navy Liaison Officer detailed current civic engagement efforts, including the deployment of a 14-member Seabee team in Chuuk State. The team is currently executing community infrastructure and humanitarian projects as part of a six-month mission, with similar future engagements planned for other FSM states. Specific areas of continued U.S. support for Pohnpei include improvements to schools and public facilities, as well as youth, education, and public health programs. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to long-term community development and disaster preparedness.

"We are grateful for the continued friendship and support of the United States Navy," said Acting Governor Movick. "The humanitarian work of the Seabees reflects a shared commitment to improving the well-being of our communities and strengthening the longstanding ties between our peoples."
Movick emphasized the Pohnpei State Government's intention to maintain close coordination with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Embassy in Kolonia. Collaborative efforts will continue to target infrastructure resilience, education, and public health across the state.
