Did you know that as well as a defensive castle, royal residence, and family home, Rockingham Castle has also housed a fair few prisoners over the centuries? 🏰👑

The dungeons of Rockingham Castle provided 'accommodation' for state prisoners after the Battle of Dunbar in 1294 and the Battle of Naseby in 1645 - they were Royalist captives as the Castle had fallen to the Parliamentarian forces...

Notable inmates? Well, possibly...🤔

In 1354 a chap by the name of Robert Hod was detained at Rockingham for offences relating to activities in Rockingham Forest...

Step inside the dungeon on your next visit and try to decipher the carvings left in the stones over centuries. Although we can't say who made the marks and why, they are an evocative reminder of all the faces of Rockingham Castle's past.
