If the young person was expected to lead the coaching provided, PVG scheme membership would be required. Whether PVG scheme membership is required depends on the responsibilities a young person has during their placement.

Not every role involving contact with children or protected adults is a regulated role. Some activities may involve incidental contact or fall within specific exceptions.

An individual must be carrying out an activity and have contact with one or both vulnerable groups for them to require PVG scheme membership.

The PVG Scheme is a legal requirement for those carrying out regulated roles and cannot be replaced by a risk assessment. However, PVG membership should support, not replace, strong safeguarding practices.

Organisations should have appropriate safeguarding and risk management measures in place to protect both the individual carrying out the role and the people they work with.
