ABOUT THIS PLACE
Holmwood is a family home like no other in Glasgow. Located in the Southside of the city, it’s masterfully designed but surprisingly cosy, with grand imagination behind it. Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson designed the house for paper magnate James Couper and his wife in 1857–8, and it’s widely regarded as this Scottish architect’s finest domestic creation. Thomson’s penchant for Grecian

styling and symmetry is found throughout Holmwood, where the bold opulent decoration echoes the colours seen in ancient Greek temples. The house is part of an ongoing conservation project and there’s always something new for visitors to see.

Introducing our Pollinator Café. Our gardens team have planted flowers that are some known favourites of pollinator bugs such as bees and butterflies.

They have a little pit stop in the flower bed, before going on to other plants around the garden!

✨Seen The Odyssey in the cinema this summer? Wondering what happened before the Trojan Horse arrived in town? ✨

Well, how convenient we should have it papered on our Dining Room walls!

Homer’s ’Iliad’ narrates the events of the fabled Trojan War, the characters languishing through the final trials and battles - all before Odysseus sets sail on his epic journey home.

These frieze panels line the walls of Holmwood’s grandest room. Drawn by John Flaxman, they were selected (and sometimes adapted!) by Alexander Thomson as part of his designs for Holmwood.

Swipe through to see some characters that feature in both tales, and a panel depicting the poet himself!
