Workers' Liberty The Alliance for Workers’ Liberty aims to build working-class solidarity through struggle. What is Workers’ Liberty? Free abortion on request.

Today one class, the working class, lives by selling its labour power to another, the capitalist class, which owns the means of production. Society is shaped by the capitalists’ relentless drive to increase their wealth. Capitalism causes poverty, unemployment, the blighting of lives by overwork, imperialism, the destruction of the environment and much else. Against the accumulated wealth and power of the capitalists, the working class has one weapon: solidarity. Workers’ Liberty aims to build solidarity through struggle so that the working class can overthrow capitalism. We want socialist revolution: collective ownership of industry and services, workers’ control and a democracy much fuller than the present system, with elected representatives recallable at any time and an end to bureaucrats’ and managers’ privileges. We fight for the labour movement to break with “social partnership” and assert working-class interests militantly against the bosses. Our priority is to work in the workplaces and trade unions, supporting workers’ struggles, producing workplace bulletins, helping organise rank-and-file groups. We are also active among students and in many campaigns and alliances. We stand for:

● Independent working-class representation in politics.

● A workers’ government, based on and accountable to the labour movement.

● A workers’ charter of trade union rights — to organise, to strike, to picket effectively, and to take solidarity action.

● Taxation of the rich to fund decent public services, homes, education and jobs for all.

● A workers’ movement that fights all forms of oppression. Full equality for women and social provision to free women from the burden of housework. Full equality for le***an, gay, bis*xual and transgender people. Black and white workers’ unity against racism.

● Open borders.

● Global solidarity against global capital — workers everywhere have more in common with each other than with their capitalist or Stalinist rulers.

● Democracy at every level of society, from the smallest workplace or community to global social organisation.

● Working-class solidarity in international politics: equal rights for all nations, against imperialists and predators big and small.

As part of Ideas for Freedom 2026 we are showing the documentary about the 40-year operation of an undercover branch of the UK police.

The film showing will be on Friday 20 November from 7pm. Tickets (£5 or £3) cover costs, but entry to the film is free with a ticket for Ideas for Freedom (21-22 November). Both can be purchased at bit.ly/ideas26

'The Spies who Ruined our Lives' (2024) was produced, directed and edited by Justyn Jones and Madoc Roberts with Jason Kirkpatrick.
From the film makers' description:
"​For over 40 years, a secret organisation spied on British citizens. This secret organisation infiltrated over 1000 groups they wanted to spy on. ​To achieve this, they created new personas by stealing the identities of dead children. They used these new personalities to start relationships with women. They also used their new identities to have s*x with women and In some cases, they even had children. Then once they had what they wanted, they abandoned the women and vanished without trace."

​This film tells that story and the campaign to uncover the operation. The ongoing public enquiry into what happened will not report until late 2027.

We will follow the film showing with an audience discussion with speakers tbc.

Our unions need to be committed to turning up the heat on defending migrants, including organising migrant workers and defending them from the new restrictions. A defence of migrants needs to go hand-in-hand with a socialist political alternative that can turn working-class people away from anger and grievance.

Fighting for the Labour government to tax the rich and rebuild and extend public services is also part of that job.

Socialism is probably the most misunderstood word in history. Some describe the police states in Russia and Eastern Europe, which collapsed in 1989-1991 as socialist. Others say that the North Korean dictatorship, or the anti-worker Chinese state, are examples of socialism. But these regimes are not remotely socialist.

Some people think that the Soviet Union under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin (1920s-1953) and up to its collapse in 1991 was socialist because “everything belonged to the state”. But who did the state belong to? In the Soviet Union, it belonged to the bureaucratic ruling class. The working class cannot collectively own anything in the absence of democracy. In Stalin’s Soviet Union, a privileged minority ruled.

Socialism has to mean democracy – more democracy than we have today. It means extending democracy into all the spheres that are controlled by bosses and bureaucrats. It means workers taking control of the industries they work in; it means society making collective decisions about what we want our cities to look like, how we want our public services to run – and it has to mean free, public debate over those things. It means freeing people from the drudgery of work, cutting working hours and removing the burden of poverty and insecurity. That is the exact opposite of what the Stalinist system offered in the past, or what that system’s successor states offer now in China, Cuba or North Korea.

Two peoples, Palestinian Arabs and Israeli Jews, inhabit the territory of Israel-Palestine. Both see it as their homeland. One has a state with a powerful military, a developed economy, and relative democracy. The other is subjugated, occupied, dispossessed.

A just peace requires draining the poison of national oppression. This means an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, alongside and with the same rights as Israel. Workers' Liberty summarises this perspective in the slogan Two States, Equal Rights.

Retaining a class perspective is also crucial. Israeli workers do not share the interests of tech billionaires or property developers in the settler movement. Palestinian workers do not share interests with the wealthy leaders of Hamas or corrupt officials.

The situation on the ground has worsened. The current Israeli government declared at its inauguration that it would uphold the "exclusive and inviolable" right to Jewish sovereignty over the entire territory. West Bank settlements aim to bury prospects for a Palestinian state. The genocidal war on Gaza resulted in mass destruction and death. Wars on Lebanon and Iran aim to project Israeli power throughout the region.

Much about Israel-Palestine is simple. A powerful, well-armed state oppresses another national group, denying their right to self-determination. In this basic sense, anti-colonial and internationalist principles require us to side with the Palestinians.

Beyond this, there are complexities. The Israeli Jews are not a minority caste, ruling by exploiting the labour of an indigenous majority, like the whites in South Africa under apartheid. Nor are they a colonial bureaucracy like the British in India. Nor are they a settler layer linked to an imperial metropole like the French in Algeria. They are a nation, with classes, and deep roots in the territory. Jewish settlers in the West Bank can return to the metropole of pre-1967 Israel. The Israeli Jewish national group as a whole has nowhere to go back to.

The system that we live under is capitalism, i.e. production governed by the profiteering of a minority class (the capitalists) who own the major industries and services. Capitalist billionaires and millionaires back up their economic power with ideological domination through a thousand channels (TV, press, social media, schooling, etc.)

Through that ideological domination, through their close relations with the top people in the unelected state machine (civil service, police, army, etc.), and through the demoralisation and weariness pushed on many working-class people created by the conditions of wage-labour, the capitalists also rule politically. They run and influence conservative and far right political parties and dominate parties which claim to stand for working people such as the Labour Party. The winners from this system enjoy mind-boggling wealth, power and privilege: the losers are ground into the dirt.

An election on 27 October could oust Israel’s far-right regime. Any likely replacement will hardly be any better on the question of Palestinian rights, but ousting the current government could create openings for anti-occupation forces to grow. This session will survey the struggles of Israel’s binational left and its efforts to build co-resistance between Palestinians and Israeli Jews, towards a horizon of equality.

Speakers: Uri Weltmann, co-founder of Standing Together and organiser with new political party A Place for Us All (personal capacity); plus activists involved with Protect The Harvest, an international mobilisation to support Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank against settler terror.
