The famous PGS daffodil walk is looking so beautiful this week, we thought it deserved its own space on the grid, especially with a blue sky in the background. Enjoy! ☺️

✨ Wow! What a superb evening of entertainment we were treated to at last Friday’s PGS Got Talent final.

🔥 The incredible eight finalists included:
Daniel the magician 🪄
Will the solo drummer 🥁
Henry the pianist 🎹
Cheynee the tap dancer 👞
James the singer and dancer 🕺🏻
Shay the impressionist 🎤
Oscar the guitarist and singer 🎸
and The Puggled Totties band 👥👥

🎶 We also enjoyed performances from Cangrejo and Static (finalist and winner of last year’s Battle of the Bands) and Leo & Rosie (last year’s PGS Got Talent winners).

👀 Our three judges - head boy Jamie, Mrs Gibbs and Mr Stickney - had their work cut out with all that talent on show, but they were helped by the votes from the enthusiastic audience.

🏆🏆 We had two joint winners - Henry on piano and Oscar on guitar & vocals - whose performances had us all spellbound and also a worthy runner-up in the shape of Shay the impressionist who had the crowd in stitches with his Donald Trump!

🕴🏻 Thank you to all the finalists and all the family and friends who came to support. A massive thanks go to outgoing head boy Henry who organised and compèred the event, and to his helpers Oscar, Robbie, Sam & Vaughn. Thank you also to Hoy for running the sound and light (and taking some amazing photos 📸 ), to Harry and Mitch for helping on the light/sound desks, to Jay for the brilliant dolphin artwork 🐬, to our three judges and also to Mrs Compiani for supporting and organising! Who’s ready for next year?!

📖 To celebrate World Book Day last Friday, Mrs Freemantle’s Year 8 class made mini books. We chose a topic we’d already covered and then created a tiny booklet aimed at a toddler learning basic French.

🇫🇷 We chatted in French about our favourite literary genres and titles, with students giving reasons for their choices.

📚 We also had a quiz to see how many classic Roald Dahl titles we could guess in French. How many can you get?!
1. Les Deux Gredins 👥
2. Danny Champion du Monde 🌍
3. Charlie et la Chocolaterie 🍫
4. Charlie et le Grand Ascenseur de Verre 🛗
5. James et la Grosse Pêche 🍑
6. Le Doigt Magique 👉
7. Fantastique Maître Renard 🦊
8. Un Amour de Tortue 🐢
9. La Potion Magique de Georges Bouillon 🧑‍🔬
10. La Girafe Le Pélican et Moi 🦒
11. Billy et Les Minuscules 📌
12. L’Énorme Crocodile 🐊
13. Sacrées Sorcières 🧙‍♀️
14. Le Bon Gros Géant 😊

Bonne chance à tous!

💛 On International Women’s Day let’s take a moment to reflect upon the women who have had an influence on our lives.

👩 Think about the women who support and encourage us every day: our mums, stepmums, carers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters and cousins, and of course our headteacher, teachers and support staff here at PGS… all these women who care for us and put our wellbeing and education first. Show your gratitude to them today or this week by doing something, however small, to say thank you. 🙏

🚌 Think also of the women throughout history who have made a mark, from the bravery of Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks who bravely resisted racial injustices to the incredible actions of the Suffragettes such as Emmeline, Christabel and Sylvia Pankhurst and Emily Wilding Davison who tirelessly campaigned for women’s right to vote.

Remember too… 🧪 the pioneering scientist Marie Curie, 💻 the world’s first computer programmer Ada Lovelace, 🧑🏻‍⚕️ the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale, 👑 our long-reigning queens Elizabeth I, Victoria and Elizabeth II, 🎖️ Nobel Peace Prizewinner Mother Teresa, 📕 author and social commentator Jane Austen, 🦍 conservationists Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall, 👩🏻‍💻 Bletchley Park codebreakers including Joan Clarke and ✈️ intrepid airwoman Amelia Earhart, all of whom changed the shape of our world, while campaigners like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai continue to speak up for young people everywhere. 🌍

Today is a chance to recognise the impact that women have on our lives, whether it’s those who’ve made history or those who shape our lives and inspire us every day. Thank you to you all. ☺️

🎯 Last week, we saw yet more action in our Sixth Form Gilpin Cup, with our inaugural darts matches held in Cleave Hall.

🎉 The tension was palpable as teams RKN and DWJ competed in front of an energetic crowd, with DWJ winning by three legs to one. Congratulations to Jake, Arthur and Marley for the win and well done to Charlie, Josh and Zac for putting up a great performance. Thanks also to Jack and Sam for their impressive scoring and calling.

♟️ Watch this space for updates on the chess contest and the ongoing University Challenge rounds, with another happening this lunchtime. It’s getting competitive out there!

🧑‍⚖️ This week our Year 8 tutor groups took part in some thought-provoking workshops with our friends from the Dorset Heaths Partnership.

🦎We started off with a look at our local heathlands and the nature that lives there (including all six of the UK’s native reptiles: adder, grass snake, smooth snake, slow worm, common lizard and sand lizard). We then saw the shocking destruction that happens as a result of arson, including the two devastating fires from last August.

🧑‍⚖️ Our students then took on roles to recreate an actual court case related to deliberate fire-setting on a local heath. The judge kept order 🔨 while the suspect, his friend, a fireman 👨‍🚒 , policeman 👮🏼‍♂️ and an elderly witness 🧓🏽 all put forward their statements and were cross-examined by the solicitor 🕵🏻‍♂️ and then questioned by the jury too.

🔥 What was a fun and interactive session actually got us thinking about how serious this crime is and how much can be lost and put in danger when fire takes hold on the heath.

🙏 Thanks so much to Amy and the other ladies from for sharing their knowledge and experience, and for giving us all a greater insight into the countryside on our doorstep.

🏅 Congratulations to Team CEF who won Monday’s University Challenge match in front of a packed Cleave Hall.

🤔 Mr Powell put the teams through their paces with some tough questions (Birthplace of Bach? Painter of the ‘Blue Boy’? Recognise the Crimewatch theme tune?) and the buzzers were kept busy, but CEF emerged victorious to go through to the next round. Commiserations to team SL who put in a strong performance but were simply outgunned.

🤩 See you next Monday lunchtime for more of the same!

🔥 Who else has been enjoying the Winter Olympics this Half Term? It got us thinking… if Olympic events were PGS subjects, what would they be and what options would you take?!

🎨 Art = Snowboarding
Creative, bold and sometimes a little rebellious. Style points matter.

🧪 Science = Bobsleigh
Chemistry in the teamwork. Biology in the teamwork. Physics in the speed and acceleration.

⛷️ Maths = Ski Jumping
All about the angles and speed. One wrong calculation and you end up floored!

🏃 PE = Speed Skating
Fast, focused, sometimes exhausting and always competitive.

🎶 Music = Big Air
Keep your rhythm, hit all the right notes and draw emotion from the crowd.

🎭 Drama = Curling
Impressive performances on the main stage and usually a dramatic twist to finish.

💀 Languages = Skeleton
Fast-paced action with twists and turns you have to learn off by heart.

🌍 Geography = Cross-Country Skiing
A journey across terrains with spectators from all countries. Stamina definitely required.

📖 History = Ice Hockey
Fast-paced action and clashes between rivals who’ve warred for centuries.

📚 English = Figure Skating
Expressive, occasionally dramatic with extra points for flair and creativity.

💻 Computer Science = Alpine Slalom
Rapid responses required and don’t miss a gate, whatever you do!

Which subject would you be taking home the gold for? 🥇✨
