Good Shepherd Cork, 50 years of working with women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, in Cork.

Edel House is an emergency residential centre for women and children who have become homeless. The service addresses the reality of those who find themselves homeless by offering accommodation and much needed support. The service offers both emergency and medium term accommodation. Edel House can accommodate 9 families and 24 single women. The care workers' knowledge of available support and resources for vulnerable women and children is first class and they work tirelessly to assist these women and children to return to independent living in the shortest possible timeframe. Goals of the Service

-To provide accommodation and support to each person who presents at the door at any time of the day or night.

-To provide an individual and detailed care plan for each service user

-To assess and understand the cause of the person becoming homeless

-To build each person's self-esteem and self confidence

-To assist with securing suitable accommodation for each service user as quickly as possible

-To liaise with and advocate when necessary with other agencies both statutory and voluntary to bring about successful outcomes.

-The staff team, assisted by volunteers provide a range of activities and classes for residents throughout the year. These activities offer a valuable source of social interaction and learning, including:

-Art & Crafts. -I.T Classes. - DVD nights
-Cookery. -Family Outings. - Massage
-Beauty Nights. -Parenting Work

Our Child and Youth team provide interaction & interventions with vulnerable children. Examples include:

-Homework club -Organised play
-Art & Crafts. -Outings

Referrals

Edel House is a self-referral establishment. Referrals can also be made by other agencies both statutory and voluntary.

A great morning at the Cork Chamber Business Breakfast! ☕✨

Today, we were delighted to attend an insightful event featuring Jenny Melia, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, who shared valuable perspectives on the future of Irish enterprise and Cork’s growing role as a hub for innovation and opportunity.

It was inspiring to hear discussions around building stronger business communities, embracing innovation, and creating a more sustainable and inclusive future.

At Good Shepherd Cork, we value opportunities to connect with the wider business community, build meaningful relationships, and explore ways we can work together to make a positive difference.

A big thank you to Cork Chamber for bringing everyone together for such an engaging morning.

“Education Builds Community - Community Builds Education” 📚🎉⭐️

The CEEG Community education providers gathering on October 22nd was truly inspirational.

Opening with Music by James from Praxis care followed by a Mindfulness practice by Fabrice Fortune we were off to a great start. Our wonderful speakers Karen Duke, Michelle McGoldrick were just two powerful testimonies. The voices of Sasha (learner from Welcome English) and Rosemary (Edel House) both spoke to our hearts, they both spoke about the support of community educations being part of their hope stories. Three Hearts including Rosemary, Bello & from Edel House elevated the energy in the room when they performed their new single ‘Love Life’, who were supported by the fantastic Fabrice. 🤍

The networking event of KURLING demonstrated by Young at Heart members & some members of Paxis care was enjoyed by everybody who took part. It is truly such an inclusive sport. Thanks to Young at heart for demonstrating the game with participants from Paris care⭐️

The conversations that were shared and the connections that were made will benefit Community education projects throughout the city.

The biggest takeaway from this day is that Community education is transformative for individuals and their families and the communities that they belong to.

We received the most wonderful hospitality From Jimmy & all the team at Parc Ui Caoimh provided by Baxter Story. The venue & food are top class. We are thankful to Cork ETB who provided funding and also thanks to REACH fund. A word of thanks to Cork Learning Cities who provided accommodation for our visiting speaker Michelle from Dublin👏

A lovely morning was had by all in Linkpoint back in September, it was a pleasure to hear from Dr Niamh Sheridan on “A Place to Belong” and her findings on the role youth clubs play in supporting parents, children and families experiencing homelessness. A lot of work & research went into the evaluation.

A really insightful discussion highlighting the vital role youth services and collaboration plays in supporting families, strengthening outcomes for children and young people, and empowering parents.

Congratulations to Dr Sheridan, our child & youth team and all involved for bringing this important work forward and highlighting the value of youth services in building stronger, more inclusive communities.

We were so grateful to welcome Eleanor Doyle to Edel House last night, where she generously shared her time & story with our residents and staff. 🩷

Eleanor gave her time so generously and reminded us all of the power of the word: BELIEVE.

Through her story, she showed the importance of hope, resilience and believing in yourself. She encouraged everyone to back themselves, recognise their own strength and show the world what they are capable of.

It was a truly powerful evening, filled with hope, inspiration and encouragement. Our women also had the opportunity to share their own stories, making the evening even more meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you to Eleanor for being so open & honest and reminding us that, with belief, hope & confidence anything is possible. 🩷

We are looking forward to following along the rest of her journey!

A Lovely Morning of Connection and Peer Support 🩷☕️

We had a lovely morning last Thursday in our Support and Advocacy office, as our Trauma-Informed Steering Group hosted a wonderful coffee morning for staff.

It was a great opportunity for colleagues to come together, connect, engage in peer support, and take a little time out of their busy days to pause and recharge.

A big well done and thank you to everyone involved in organising such a lovely morning and helping to create a supportive space for staff to connect and look after one another. 🩷
