About Soof

Soof is a counted thread embroidery practised in the Kutch region and parts of Rajasthan. The technique involves placing successive stitches just one thread of the fabric weave apart, creating highly geometric patterns with a strong presence of triangular motifs.

Traditionally, Soof is done without any pre-drawn outlines. Artisans work from the reverse side of
the fabric, visualising the pattern in their minds and translating it directly onto the cloth.
This requires immense skill, concentration, and precision, making each piece distinct.

Soof motifs often draw from the artisan’s surroundings and daily life — flowers, birds, stars, and
natural elements expressed through rhythmic, repeating forms. The eight-petalled flower, for
instance, represents the lotus, a symbol of life and growth.

The building blocks of Soof embroidery are:
Lath (lines)
Suf (triangles)
Leher (waves)

Together, these elements form the foundation of this intricate and enduring craft tradition.
