OFAI was set up by the Indian organic farming community, environmentalists and social activists in order to promote organic farming, lobby for its official adoption by the Indian government, assist farmers dependent on chemicals to convert to organic systems, help organic farmers with marketing their organic produce and advise its members on how to educate their children outside the urban-oriented school system so that they could be excellent stewards of the lands they inherit.

Remembering SOIL Vasu!

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of SOIL Vasu, who left us yesterday evening.

Many of you knew him personally, his energy, his music, and his passion for soil and all that it means to our lives.

Vasu’s unique ways of making farmers, students, and all of us think deeply about soil were truly unmatched. Through his soulful songs (which he himself wrote and composed) and his explorations connecting soil with music, weeds, air, the rural economy, and ornaments, he opened our minds to entirely new dimensions.

He coined the term “Grameena Ashtaishwarya Bokkasa,” linking soil to the rural circular economy, and led important studies like the composite index for assessing farms (ASHA, OFAI & IIT Bombay) and research with Greenpeace India on pesticide impacts on children. He was a committed companion in the movement to keep India GM-free.

Those who have seen him in a village setting know how alive he would become — engaging farmers in meaningful conversations, singing with heartfelt energy, inspiring all who listened.

Vasu had many plans still ahead of him — calendars to make, events to host, and transformations to nurture. Despite his own hardships, he stayed cheerful and humble, always radiating warmth and humour.

Vasu will be missed by so many of us , his songs will still be sung, his words remembered, and his work carried forward.

Rest in peace, SOIL Vasu. Your life’s mission will continue to inspire.
