The D’ Sensations Cultural Group of Fond St. Jaques Soufriere undertook a cleanup as part of a community beautification project. The group’s objective is to give back to the community while creating awareness about keeping the environment clean.
The SLSWMA assisted by providing garbage bags and gloves to the group to facilitate the cleanup. The Waste Contractor for the Fond St. Jaques area also assisted by facilitating the timely collection of waste, thereby ensuring appropriate final disposal at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill.
The Authority commends all parties involved in the planning & execution of this activity and looks forward to the possibility of collaborating on future projects/ activities.

On Wednesday, 9th February, SLSWMA officers delivered a presentation on Waste Management to grade six students of The Gros-Islet Primary School.
The presentation highlighted many aspects of waste management such as; waste categories, littering, waste reduction, recycling, and composting.
The students were very engaged and did not shy away from asking many questions, with some individuals being able to explain to SLSWMA staff the procedure when accessing the Deglos Sanitary Landfill.
The Authority remains committed to its Public Education Mandate and looks forward to assisting schools in raising awareness on waste management and its importance to our country.

At the end of 2021, Pennsylvanian Marissa Donohue and 2019 Alumnus Ismael Essome delivered capacity-building training for local green industry leaders and recycling workshops for secondary school students in Douala and Kribi, Cameroon. They also installed a life-sized public art sculpture of a whale made out of plastic bottles to engage residents in conversations about ecological sustainability. They continue to virtually exchange ideas and environmental education resources.

The Mayor of Castries alongside a team from the Castries Constituency Council (CCC) , Saint Lucia National Housing Corporation (NHC) , and the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA) on January 7th, 2022 undertake a joint tour of problematic areas with respect to waste management within the NHC housing Complex in the city.

During the process, the team also interacted with residents and commercial establishments to receive much needed feedback and recommendations on collection action which can be taken to added concern.

The areas visited included the CDC housing areas, Barnard Hill, Darling Road , Chaussee Road. The Manager of the National Housing Authority Mrs. Sidonia Childs noted that this activity was a demonstration of how state agencies must come together to address common challenges. Mr. Cassian Henry who headed the SLSWMA’s team also saw this as a useful exercise which he indicated should be replicated in other areas.

The agencies took a number of decisions which when implemented would help address the poor waste management challenges in the areas visited.
