Protecting our oceans starts on land. 🌊📦

Saint Lucia is taking a massive step forward in safeguarding its coastal livelihoods by redefining how the island manages its solid waste. Through a strategic partnership between the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority and the Unleashing the Blue Economy of the Caribbean (UBEC) project, a multi-layered plan is underway to protect the regional blue economy.

Key highlights from the initiative:
🔹 Infrastructure Modernization: Upgrading the Deglos Landfill with specialized tipping faces and improved leachate treatment systems.
🔹 The Southern Integrated Facility: Moving away from traditional dumping toward an integrated system focused on recycling and composting.
🔹 Circular Economy Solutions: Launching a waste optimization study to divert materials like plastics, e-waste, and organic waste (such as coconut husks) before they ever reach a landfill.
🔹 Community Buy-In: Bridging the gap between household waste habits and the preservation of vital marine tourism and fisheries.

Sustainability isn’t just about protecting fish stocks—it’s about managing the waste we create today to secure our economic assets for tomorrow.

🏆 Carmen Renee Memorial School Crowned Winner of Saint Lucia's First Green Champions Challenge 🇱🇨🌱
Big congratulations to Carmen Renee Memorial Primary School, officially crowned the 2026 Green Champions! 🥇 Over four weeks, more than 2,400 students across 5 Saint Lucian primary schools teamed up to divert 2,460 e-waste items and aluminum cans away from the Deglos landfill!

Here is how the schools stacked up for their incredible eco-efforts:

Winner: Carmen Renee Memorial ➡️ Took home the Massy Stores Champions Award (EC$1,500 in vouchers + school-wide refreshments!).

First Runner-Up: Canon Laurie Anglican Primary ➡️ Received the LUCELEC Spark Award (EC$1,000 for school needs).

Green Seed Award Winners: St. Aloysius RC Boys, Ave Maria Girls', and Gordon & Walcott Methodist ➡️ Each received EC$333 from SLASPA to fund backyard gardens or recycling corners!

🌍 Why It Matters
Coordinated by Greening the Caribbean (GtC) and the SLSWMA, all collected items are now at the Odsan recycling center being safely prepped for certified international export. This initiative reached into 12+ communities—proving that when the public, private, and community sectors move together, real change happens!

🔄 The Best Part? It’s Permanent!
The challenge may be over, but the impact isn't. All 5 schools get to keep their branded green collection bins as permanent community recycling drop-off points. Plus, plans are already underway to make this an annual event starting in 2027! ♻️
