May is observed as Reading Month. Let’s Celebrate our Saint Lucian Writers. Let’s promote literacy!! Read More, Read Local, Read Caribbean. 📚📖📖

This installment of LITERARY HIGHLIGHT features Vladimir Lucien, award-winning Writer/Poet of poetry publication, “Sounding Ground”. This is a collection that is alive with its conscious tensions: between divergent family visions of respectability and revolt, tradition and modernity. It is enriched by an instinctive humanity that encompasses socially aspiring ancestors, an authoritarian headmaster, and the rebellious children of the poor – the “negative elements” of the squatter settlements. There is, too, amidst a young man’s zest in life, a tender awareness of the inescapability of the frailty of age. In the music of the poems themselves, there’s an enlivening counterpoint between the natural rhythms of creole speech and the metric organisation of the line and its patterns of sound.

In 2014, this book was launched as part of the CDF’s Emancipation Programmes of Activities.

You can purchase your copy of “Sounding Ground” via https://www.peepaltreepress.com/books/sounding-ground or Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sounding-Ground-Vladimir-Lucien/dp/1845232399

Gwan Gwèk Kilté - Highlights from our 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣9️⃣ Calendar #TeddysonJohn #CulturalIcon #Music 🇱🇨

Teddyson John (TJ) is a performing artiste who started his musical career at a young age, receiving early nurturing in the church. He has a passion for drumming, percussion, bass guitar and the keyboard, which he relentlessly pursued and eventually mastered on his own. Teddyson performed at the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival Main Stage, opening for renowned international artistes. In 2009, he headlined the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival, as part of Men of Soul including Jeffery Osborne, James Ingram and Bebe Winans backed by George Duke and his all-star band. In 2010, TJ and his band opened the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival for R&B artist Ne-Yo. He also performed at the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival in 2014 and 2016.

In 2007, TJ made a bold decision to step out his musical comfort zone of gospel and R & B and embrace the soca music genre, where he was crowned as Saint Lucia‟s first Groovy Soca Monarch. TJ‟s versatility in Jazz and Soca has afforded him the opportunity to perform on many international stages including Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Martinique, Barbados, Paris and Canada. His outstanding composition “Allez‟ received widespread national acclaim and propelled him to the finals of the 2016 International Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad & Tobago.

The International Reggae and World Music Awards bestowed the award for Best Calypso/Soca Entertainer to TJ in 2016. His 2018 song “Vent‟ is one of his most popular, hitting the local and international airwaves and creating an unprecedented level of excitement among his fans. It has been dubbed ‟the people‟s anthem‟.

He has gone on to accomplish great things for his career and as an ambassador for Saint Lucia.

Gwan Gwèk Kilté - Highlights from our 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣9️⃣ Calendar #ChristineSamuel #CulturalIcon #TheatreArtsTeacher #Dance #Choreography #VisualArts #Author #ChristyCreations 🇱🇨

Angela Christine Samuel is a multi-talented award-winning Saint Lucian artiste who for the past 40 years has earned recognition for her impressive skills in different artistic genres. Presently a retired teacher of Theatre Arts from the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, she has received much national acclaim for her work as a dancer, dance tutor and choreographer. Today, Christine works under her Christy Creations brand, using her extensive artistic skills in the visual arts to produce original ladies bags and accessories that reflect vibrant Saint Lucian/Caribbean artistry and beauty. Every individual Christy Creations item is a bona fide original, one-of-a-kind with a great story of its own.

Christine uses creative hand painting, and carefully selected accessories on her personally designed and crafted bags to establish her unique design signature. Christy Creations has developed into an extraordinary brand, featured in the stores of Sea Island Cotton and Howelton Estate 1896, Saint Lucia. On June 30, 2018 Christine was recognized for her great work and received the Award of Excellence - Fashion Innovation from Caribbean Style & Culture in Washington DC, USA.

In 2021, she also published her first book. “Dance Footprints: 40 years of Dance in Saint Lucia is the first published historical record of dance and dancers in Saint Lucia. Starting from the sixties, a time of arts and cultural renaissance and coming to today’s dancescape, she treats us to vignettes of these creative artist and choreographers, their performances, studio spaces …, the long long-forgotten alongside the well-recognized stars of those stages.” [source: TheVoice]

Dear CDF, I absolutely loved episode e. Which is not to say I was any less thrilled by the two preceding episodes featuring Geena McPhee and Katherine Atkinson. These performers are each so uniquely different. There is something so earthy and pure about Naomie Grandison. Her stories are so melodic, that voice is so pure. Just very engaging. Good job Naomi. Great job Drenia Frederick, Tember Cadette, Jean-Claude Whyte Lagon, Ray Henry-Wynne, Celeste Burton and the entire CDF crew. I am so, so proud of this. #VoicesOfTheUNderground #artreach2020 #cdfsaintlucia
