The report of the Executive Director highlights that factors such as increase in costs at source, exchange rate and freights for imported products and inputs, and local labour and energy costs remain major drivers of product prices. The analysis, however, recommends further assessment of pricing behaviour along the supply chain for powdered milk, sardines, frozen beef and in particular frozen mutton to better understand the underlying cause of the increased price-import costs margins for these products.

In this regard, the Competition Commission will be engaging with the various stakeholders as part of its mandate to review the conditions of competition in the market.

The Executive Director wishes to highlight that the Competition Commission can intervene in cases of excessive pricing, as per the Competition Act 2007. The envisaged review is intended to get the perspectives of the operators on prices and costs factors. At this stage, there is no basis for suspecting any abusive prices. The review is intended to inform potential enforcement actions, if warranted.

The Competition Commission today rewarded the winners of its 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 during a prize-giving ceremony held at the 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐖𝐢é𝐡é 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦, 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐮𝐬, 𝐑é𝐝𝐮𝐢𝐭. The event brought together students and educators to celebrate the achievements of young participants who demonstrated a strong understanding of competition law and its importance in Mauritius.

The Essay Contest, which targeted 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote awareness of competition principles and their role in fostering fair markets, consumer welfare and economic development.

The ceremony was attended by the 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚ë𝐥 𝐓𝐳𝐨𝐮𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐨 𝐘𝐄𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐈𝐊 𝐘𝐔𝐄𝐍, 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, and 𝐌𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐡, 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, among other distinguished personalities.

In his address, the Minister commended the Competition Commission for organising the contest, describing it as an important initiative that encourages young people to engage with issues that directly affect consumers and the economy. He highlighted how the contest helped participants better understand market dynamics, price formation mechanisms and the value of fair competition in supporting economic growth and consumer protection.

The Executive Director emphasised that initiatives such as the Essay Contest contribute to building a stronger culture of competition awareness among young people, who represent the next generation of consumers, professionals, and decision-makers.

The Executive Director has launched the Poultry Market Study pursuant to Section 30 of the Competition Act, to review the conditions of competition in the sector.
The study has been initiated to better understand the competition dynamics across the poultry supply chain which involves the farming, production and supply of chicken meat and eggs.

The Executive Director has launched the Poultry Market Study to better understand the competition dynamics across the poultry supply chain which involves the farming, production and supply of chicken meat and eggs. It will assess the market structure, regulatory framework and conduct of operators, including pricing and the commercial relationship between large poultry operators and contract growers.
The market study is intended to inform potential policy recommendations and/or enforcement actions. It is to be highlighted that the launch of a market study does not indicate findings of anti-competitive conduct by any operator.

The Executive Director of the Competition Commission welcomed members of the media today to a press briefing held on 01 June 2026 to explain the features, operation and benefits of the recently launched 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 (𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗣).

In his opening remarks, 𝗠𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗵, 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, highlighted that TACAP serves as both an enforcement and compliance tool, providing an avenue for businesses to regularize past conduct through self-reporting, strengthen competition compliance, and help restore competition in markets. The Executive Director also emphasized the important role of the media in raising awareness of TACAP, enhancing understanding of its requirements, and enabling the business community to make informed decisions regarding participation in the programme.

It is recalled that TACAP emanates from the “Competition Commission Trade Association and Cooperatives Amnesty Programme Regulations 2026 (GN 53 of 2026)” which became operational on 25 May 2026 and will remain valid until 25 November 2026.

To this effect, the Competition Commission has issued the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗣 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺 as well as the 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 on its website.

The Competition Commission is pleased to announce the imminent launch of the ‘𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 (𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐀𝐏)’, as prescribed under the Competition Commission (Trade Association and Cooperatives Amnesty Programme) Regulations 2026 (GN 53 of 2026).

TACAP will be going live on 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. TACAP is a one-off and temporary amnesty programme being offered solely to trade associations (including professional bodies), cooperatives and their members involved in cartel conduct at the level of the association/cooperative which can amount to 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (section 41 of the Competition Act 2007) or 𝐛𝐢𝐝 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 (section 42 of the Competition Act 2007).

As highlighted by 𝐌𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐡, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, “TACAP is a unique opportunity for trade associations (including professional bodies) and cooperatives to voluntarily disclose qualifying collusive conduct, adopt corrective measures and turn the page without facing fines, subject to the fulfilling the conditions of the programme. TACAP is a chance for such businesses to regularize their activities and help build a stronger competition culture for the benefit of consumers and the Mauritian economy as a whole”.

The Executive Director of the Competition Commission launches a market inquiry into the provision of private healthcare services in Mauritius, under the newly introduced Section 51B of the Competition Act.
This inquiry aims to identify potential distortions to competition in the supply private healthcare services that may adversely affect customers, and to come up with policy recommendations or enforcement actions, where warranted.

The Competition Commission had the pleasure of welcoming a group of Law students from 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 on Friday 24 April 2026 at its offices for an interactive exchange on Competition Law. The session was facilitated by 𝗠𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻, Head Investigations, 𝗠𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗱, Head Investigations, and 𝗠𝘀 𝐍𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐡, Senior Competition Analyst.

The visit provided students with practical insights into the role and mandate of the Commission, as well key provisions of the Competition Act covering cartels, monopolies and merger control. The sessions were complemented by engaging discussions and Q&A segments, allowing students to explore how competition rules are applied in practice.

Such initiatives form part of the Competition Commission’s ongoing commitment to promoting awareness and understanding of competition law among future legal professionals.
