SWAKOPMUNDER PALMENALLEE

The palm trees in the Promenade, Swakopmund, had been planted during 1929, at the request of the then mayor of the town, Mr Arnold Schad.
The little palm trees would then have been three years old, or even a bit older.
This particular species of palm tree, Phoenix canariensis, originates from the Canary Islands where they had adapted to cope with the salty air of the Atlantic ocean.
These stately palm trees in Swakopmund would be 100 years old nowadays.
