*High school lifesavers stepping up*

Big thanks to St Thomas College who hosted a blood drive on campus recently. Shout out to Villa Maria and Riccarton High who also joined in on the mega group donation.

Together they combined for 49 blood donations collected on the day. Thanks so much team. Those donations will save up to 147 lives!

It’s a privilege to welcome new donors into our lifesaving whānau, and it’s especially inspiring to see young people so willing to support their community.

A huge shout out to the Kaiako who support this kaupapa. We couldn’t achieve what we do, without your support.

Thanks again!

*300+ for Joe and friends*

Canterbury donor Joe recently gave his 300th lifesaving donation. Many thanks and congratulations Joe! After beginning donating whole blood at high school, Joe switched to plasma a few years later and has maintained steady donations ever since. An incredible commitment to helping others!

Not only is Joe a fantastic donor himself but he has recruited friends Alun and Peter to donate too. Apparently sending photos of the free snacks is the key to winning over potential donors! Thanks Peter and Alun for coming onboard NZBlood’s lifesaving crew.

100 special donations from Oleg.

Christchurch donor Oleg recently notched up his 100th donation with NZBlood. Many thanks and congratulations Oleg. That’s a lot of lives saved!

Oleg started his lifesaving commitment in Timaru, giving whole blood at mobile blood drives. Upon moving to Christchurch, he began donating plasma and has been very consistent with fortnightly appointments. An incredible commitment and contribution to the community! Thanks again!

Oleg usually donates a special type of plasma called Cryoprecipitate (Cryo).
Cryo comes from your plasma and is used to prevent or control bleeding in people whose own blood does not clot properly. Cryo is a source of fibrinogen for patients who cannot produce the necessary amount of this important clotting protein on their own. Fibrinogen makes the protein meshwork in clots to stop the bleeding. This is used in patients who are experiencing a major haemorrhage (surgery, trauma, obstetrics).
Once donated, Cryo is processed and transfused straight to patients needing these lifesaving treatments.
Only men can donate Cryo because women often produce antibodies to their baby’s white cells. These antibodies are found in the plasma and, if transfused to a patient with a similar tissue type to the baby, can cause a fatal transfusion reaction. Men who have never been transfused, or pregnant, don’t make these antibodies.

Whether donating whole blood, plasma, or platelets, every donor and donation is special in some way. Please get in touch to find out how you can be a special donor too.

Mānawatia a Matariki ✨

As we welcome the Māori New Year, we take a moment to reflect, remember those who have gone before us, celebrate with whānau and friends, and look ahead with hope for the year to come.

Matariki is a time of renewal, connection, and giving back to our communities. One meaningful way to make a difference this season is by donating blood or plasma. Every donation helps ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients across Aotearoa when they need them most.

As you set your intentions for the new year, why not add donation to your list? Whether you're a regular donor or considering your first donation, we'd love to see you.

He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata. Goodwill (or love) towards others is a precious treasure.

Mānawatia a Matariki from all of us at NZ Blood Service. ❤️

Shoutout to our New Zealand Media & Entertainment blood buddies ❤️

This team shows up together, donates together, and keeps the good vibes flowing.

Between the 14 of them, they’ve made 67 blood donations and 18 plasma donations, making a real difference across Aotearoa.

Proof that giving is better with your mates. 💪

Give our NZME crew some love in the comments.

Incredible 250 donations from Mark.

Regular Christchurch platelet donor Mark recently completed his 250th donation. Congratulations and many thanks for being a lifesaver, Mark!

Every donor is a superhero but being a regular platelet donor puts Mark in a relatively small and important group of people who are capable of donating platelets. With a shelf-life of only 7 days, platelets, which help our blood to clot, are in constant demand to treat patients in urgent need following accidents, injuries or medical procedures. Platelets can help treat cancers such as leukaemia or lymphoma as well as newborn babies requiring special transfusions.

Mark’s reliability is so legendary that the same bed is set aside for him at midday every Tuesday fortnight. Incredible! BIG thanks again. Looking forward to seeing you in 2 weeks’ time.

If you’re interested in donating platelets, please check out this information and get in touch to join our lifesaving whānau.
