Community Rules

Firstly, thank you for being part of our online community and participating in conversations with us. We share content that tells Murihiku Southland’s unique story through the people that live in the region and the work that Environment Southland does for now and the future. We want to create an open, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone interacting with our Council channel

s. To meet these expectations, we have community rules to help the Environment Southland communications team manage and moderate users' comments and activity. Our community rules outline user behaviour and actions our team will not tolerate on our channel. If rules are breached, we have a one-strike policy, and we will take the necessary steps to manage the incident fairly and consistently for all users. We will do our best to respond to your comments, queries, and constructive feedback. If you see a te reo word or phrase we have used and don't know its meaning, you can ask us or head to www.maoridictionary.co.nz. 🔥 Do you know someone who lights up the lives of others, even when their own days feel a little cold?

Winter heating can impact Southland’s air quality — but simple choices make a real difference. So, thanks to the support of our Good Wood suppliers Waikiwi Wood & Coal and Wholesale Firewood, we’re giving away three loads of free dry firewood to deserving Invercargill or Gore households — and we need your help to find them!

👉 Entries are open until 21 June via our online form. Head to https://www.haveyoursay.es.govt.nz/firewood2026 to nominate someone who deserves a little extra warmth this winter.

Please note this competition is restricted to people living in Invercargill and Gore due to these locations being designated airsheds. Read more about airsheds on our website here - www.es.govt.nz/air

🌱 From award-winning to industry-leading action

In 2024, Kiwi Skips took out the Environmental Leadership and Innovation in Business award at the Environment Southland Community Awards. ♻️

Recognised for their commitment to sorting and repurposing construction waste, they’ve been helping divert huge volumes from landfill — and they haven’t slowed down since.

So, what’s changed in the past year and a half? 👀

⬇️ Hear from Dan Butterfield on what Kiwi Skips has achieved since their win, the progress they’ve made, and where they’re heading next.

🌳Last Friday, senior students from Menzies College rolled up their sleeves to support a community planting day along a stream that feeds into the Wyndham Wildlife Refuge oxbow.

⭐ Organised by the Three Rivers Catchment Group, with support from Thriving Southland, the goal was to improve habitat for taonga species.

🥬 Funding for the project was provided by Environment Southland and the Mataura Catchment Liaison Committee through the Mataura Catchment Group Grant.

🐟 The stream is an important home for native species, including the threatened giant kōkopu and native eels. The group planted carex and flax to enhance the space. Additional plantings, such as cabbage trees, will also help encourage birdlife back into the area over time.

🙏 Ka pai Dave Diprose, Environment Southland land sustainability officer Anastazia Raymond and Tessa Miller from Thriving Southland for their support and guidance in making the day such a success.
