At the heart of this commitment is Innovative Waste Kaikoura Ltd, the company responsible for the management of the Kaikoura Resource Recovery Centre.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori may be complete, but the kaupapa continues. Last week, we shared seven kupu connected to zero waste and caring for our environment:

Recycling is important, but it works best when we put the correct items in the correct place.

Before placing something in your recycling:
✅ Check that it is accepted locally
✅ Empty and rinse it
✅ Remove any food or other contamination
✅ Keep rubbish out of the recycling
✅ Remove all lids

Did you know that many of our kitchen and garden scraps can be transformed into valuable wairākau?

Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, leaves and grass clippings can break down and return nutrients to the whenua (land).

Composting helps us:
🌿 Keep organic material out of landfill
🌿 Feed our soil
🌿 Grow healthy plants
🌿 Complete a natural cycle

Food is valuable, but too much of it ends up as waste.

We can make the most of our kai by:
🥕 Planning meals before shopping
📝 Writing a shopping list
❄️ Freezing food before it spoils
🥣 Turning leftovers into another meal
🤝 Sharing surplus kai with whānau or friends

Clothing can be mended, furniture can be restored, bicycles can be repaired and many household items can be given a second life.

Repairing something:

Before something goes into the rubbish, think about whether it could be used again.

You could:
🥤 Carry a reusable drink bottle
☕ Take a reusable cup
🛍️ Bring your own shopping bags
🥡 Reuse containers for storage

♻️ Kupu o te rā — Word of the day:

PARA KORE — ZERO WASTE

Para means waste or rubbish, while kore means no, none or zero.

Every time we refuse an unnecessary item, reuse something or recycle correctly, we take another step towards Para Kore.

🔧 Repair, reuse and keep it out of landfill! 🧵🚲

Innovative Waste Kaikōura was delighted to attend the Repair Café held at the Scout Hall on 12 September.

The event offered a fantastic range of practical repair stations, including:

🔪 Knife sharpening
🚲 Bike maintenance and repairs
🧵 Sewing and mending
⚡ Electrical testing and maintenance
🛠️ General repairs and maintenance

Repair Cafés are a brilliant way to give household items a new lease on life, share valuable skills and reduce unnecessary waste.

A huge thank you to the awesome Kaikōura volunteers who gave their time, knowledge and skills to make this fantastic community initiative possible. 💚

We’re already looking forward to the next Repair Café—date to be confirmed!
